You can smell and taste that this whisky is very young, it's only 3 years old. And it's brilliant for a 3 year old whisky, but wait until it's 10 years old...
    • Nose
Smoke and tar of course, but litte too few aromas. The nose is dominated from the alcohol, that burns my nose.
    • Taste
The peat blends perfectly with the sweetness, but the there is something about the flavors. Yes, the flavors are to weak, needs more time in da oak.
    • Finish
Intense but little to short, peat attack then it's over.

Oloroso Sherry Cask matured mossy moist smelling Islay with towering ppfl given age. That said, more than excellent solid-poked SM that starts very soft, almost apologetic, sprinkles some vanilla, then peat hacks in, followed by salt, after which softness returns. The creamy, soft, fairly long finish does the rest. Great, good balance - but not worth 180 euros. Really 87 points.

I don't have much experience with Kilchoman yet, but I do get some hype rash from that brand.

[November, 2009]  I had this dram during a Prof. Schobert "Islay" tasting at Bonn.

    In
my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 80 points.  My notes state an immature profile with some unpleasant cheesy aromas.  The taste is quite full-bodied and one can imagine that this becomes a great whisky after more time of maturation (I wrote this end of 2009).

Well, really nice whisky given the age.
    • Nose
Light smoke, stable, and a slight vegetable note. Some very sweet fruit in the far back.
    • Taste
About the same as the nose, but in a dryer way.
    • Finish
It’s nice, elegant, but there’s not a lot of “umfh” to it. Light peaty notes.

Amazing for just a three year old

  18. Edwin de Lange scored this whisky 95 points Expert Senior

As expected of Kilchoman, this is a great dram, nice peaty, straightforward, clear and lots of taste. A real Islay style.

  19. nijholtm scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

not getting any of the olorosso sherry in here.
    • Nose
the nose is too flat, no complexity at all! Diesel, tar and wet hay.
    • Taste
this Kilchoman gives me coal, ginger, green olives and whipped cream.
    • Finish
the iodine and sweet flavours linger on to vanilla.

  20. Willie JJ scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

This is an excellent three year old whisky. But it is a three year old
whisky. I can detect no sherry in this at all. It seems 100% bourbon to
me. It's great fun and as enjoyable as the young Ardies were. If the
whisky continues to mature like this and if we haven't just been given
the best dozen or so casks in the warehouse then Kilchoman will be a
regular drinker for me when it grows up a little more (assuming my liver
    lasts that long).
    • Nose
Huge hit of peat smoke followed by fishiness and a vanilla sweetness. A hint of smoked bacon and coal dust.
    • Taste
barley sugar sweetness and more coal dust
    • Finish
      Long, hot and smokey

This is excellent for a 3 year old, but is a bit pricey. I await the day of the 10 year old from these guys.

  22. JayR scored this whisky 88 points Member Junior

needs to be cask strength. New Spirit was better to me.

  23. fudodachi scored this whisky 69 points Member Junior

Straight from the bottle: not good. But let it breathe 15 minutes in your glass, and it turns out to be ok, almost good. (I have no note on the color, but it's certainly not gin clear.)
    • Nose
      Green apple. Fruity. Good.
    • Taste
      Pear. Fudge. Bites hard, edgy.
    • Finish
      Empty, short.

I've got two of this one. One is never to be opened, and I got it when I was visiting Kilchoman in 2009
