Nose: I could make mad passionate nose to this all night. This is all fruit like my beloved sherry casks but somehow from a bourbon cask. Light golden raisin, apricot, canned in syrup lychee, dates, nougat. Orange cream soda. Later I found classic bourbon notes: vanilla, creme brule.
Palate: gentle and balanced, grapefruit zest, cedar
Finish: super refined and nuanced. long and subtle.
Old bourbon cask single malt. sweet, thick, sweet, spicey. oak and a lot of it but not at all too much. dark honey, malty, woody. the finish is sweet and quite long lasting. very fine malt but compared to the 1985 this is missing a bit of complexity. (WSZ18)
After 32 years, the Brennereicharakter is still there. Gorgonzola. Sweet vanilla with noticeable dusty oak. Orange quark with brown sugar. In between, it gets really fresh with lemon cake and some grapefruit. Some green apple. At the same time also browned apple remainder. Honeywine with logging. The oak takes over.
Oak dominates. Intense, full and creamy. Apple and cinnamon mulled wine. Bright apples. Tobacco tracks. Wooden boards. Rather dry. Coffee in the after-taste, together with even more intense mulled wine.
The 1984 is drawn from just 12 casks of classic Bourbon-aged Bruichladdich, a style Adam considers to be: “the ultimate expression of our spirit. The fruit, the faint salt tang, the signature elegance is all there with layer upon layer of vanilla/butterscotch complexity.”
Notes by BRUICHLADDICH
Gorgeous. Classic old school Bruichladdich. Coconut, warm Muscovado sugar, vanilla custard, grapefruit, mango, baked ginger biscuits, marzipan. After a while notes of date syrup and sultana.
Soft and gentle texture, a delicate dram. Crème brulee, buttercup and orange zest. Gently warming the palate, it opens to reveal a touch of leather, toasted oak and praline. Sweet citrus and mango come through later.
So gentle but a lovely finish of warm scones and dried fruit, candied orange, lemon peel and apricot jam.
"In 2008, our then master distiller Jim McEwan identified a classic vintage parcel of that celebrated style and re-casked it into fresh Bourbon for the last leg of an epic journey. This dram comes from the very last 12 casks of the 1984 legacy distillation, poignantly filled on 31st December of that year."
