    • Nose
Thickened dark fruit compote fresh from the stove, aromatic dried apricots, to wonderfully spicy Muscovado sugar and sweet orange peel in salted caramel. I also have a lot more spices here, especially bitter cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon bark, plus some marzipan. I once had the pleasure of eating mince pie in Ireland and the nose reminds me of it. The barrel is also noticeable from the beginning and the wood is edged and moist. The longer you smell, the deeper you get sucked into the dark spicy aromas of this young Speysiders, more and more it becomes a gorgeous combination of orange fruit, spices and old wood. I'm always amazed how full and ripe so young whiskys can be if they are aged in good barrels - fascinating!
    • Taste
The palate belongs entirely to the barrel, and it must have been a pretty old Oloroso barrel. Instead of the distinctive ginger sharpness of the sister barrel, this Glenrothes trickles tingling and with pronounced fruit acid over the entire tongue, juicy oranges, mandarins and tart grapefruits - the salivary glands are running at full speed! Here again sweet cane sugar, aromatic pipe tobacco, pickled raisins and many spices such as cloves, cinnamon and nutmeg deepen the taste enormously. The keg quickly brings tart, dry and musty damp wood notes and slows the salivation. Beautiful tannins put a light fur on the tongue.
    • Finish
The finish is rather medium and is characterized by sweet oranges, prunes, old moist oak and a malty tart sweetness. Overall fruity-dry and a bit bitter.

A 10 year old Glenrothes for currently € 250 (as of May 2020) is a violent announcement. I wonder if this very high price will do the whisky justice? The Glenrothes is amber in color with a strong 66.8% alcohol content in the glass. You can also feel it in the nose, the alcohol tingles in the nose and I have to think of raspberry-Ahoybraus powder. The whisky is wonderfully fruity, boiled plums, dates, raisins and ripe cherries literally pour into the nose and combine with cinnamon, pepper, a little gingerbread spice and nutmeg. A sour fruit note of a few drops of lime juice and a bit tarter orange peel ensure a pleasant freshness. The peppery spiciness gets a hint of herbal character. However, the alcohol is so strong that I have to dilute it down myself to smell it. I take a sip of it undiluted beforehand and it immediately becomes clear that this whisky cannot be reasonably drunk without the addition of water. Diluted down to a little less than 60% alcohol, the alcohol in the nose is still noticeable, but does not prick quite as violently. The sour notes are now a little more present, the whisky is no longer as Christmas-heavy as before. Those who like intense sherry barrel whiskys will be happy here. Very powerful aromas that complement each other very well and make you want to finally drink this Glenrothes.

The whisky is still incredibly strong, the alcohol tingles on the tongue with a slight chilli spiciness and black pepper. Sweet raisins, dates and plum jam take up the mouth, strong spices are added and tart notes of leather and chocolate-covered coffee beans flash in the background. The raspberry-Ahoibrause provides a slight tart, sweet tingling. This whisky will surely be too intense for some whisky lovers. This is not a gentleman who caresses the taste buds and reveals his complexity ... this is a daredevil who steps in the door and immediately makes it clear that it will be intense. And what he does, he can do extremely well. A very intense sherry bomb that is currently so popular.

The finish is medium long. Pepper and a little leather combine with plum jam, the aftertaste of dates and raisins, lime peel and the fading tingling of the Ahoi shower. I like it when the tart notes have a sweet and fruity partner on the finish. The spiciness is dominant for me here.

In summary, I can say that I thought the whisky was great. It goes in the same direction as the Glenlivet 12y from Signatory Vintage, which was bottled for cherry whisky. A young, intense sherry barrel whisky that fully meets the current trend of “dark soup” lovers. I like to have such whiskys in my glass every now and then. Constantly, I could not drink such whiskys.

I get good 90/100 points. A great whisky! The Glenlivet mentioned above can keep up, however, is very similar in character to this Glenrothes and I paid less than half for the Glenlivet. I would not pay the current € 250.

Well, water helps a bit but not much to get out of the critical area with my taste. Really not my favorite. Too bad!
    • Nose
      85 85
Lots of caramel, toffee, burnt sugar, molasses, cooked fruits, jam, oranges, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, xmas cake and unfortunately some hints of butterscotch... that I don't like that much
    • Taste
      84 84
Very punchy, but also creamy and liquorice, more of toffee and brown sugar, stewed fruits, good sweetness, hints of leather and solvent
    • Finish
      83 83
Long, warm, more spices and woody notes, not drying

I like whiskys that really go around. And it does it here! As little as I like Glenrothes entry-level standards, I'm really excited about those real gems from this Speyside distillery. Terrific !!
