[January, 2018]  Just a quick review from a sample.  I did not like the peated Glendronach 8-years old "The Hielan" so I am sceptical about this one, too.  Right, this is not what I like.  The peaty and the barley flavours are not really integrated and the whole dram tastes somewhat immature.  The wood is too bitter for my tastebuds and the finish gets very adstringent.

It seems as if Glendronach as a malt cannot stand heavy peaty flavours and by the way:  Why the hell should one of the best Highland malt distilleries that is famous for its adorable sherry cask maturations do peated malt at all?  Is it greed or Zeitgeist?  In Germany we say "Schuster, bleib bei deinen Leisten!" (Cobbler, stick to your last!)...

This GlenDronach is very promising on the nose. Almost like a full term maturation in port casks. But the palate tells a different story. This malt seems quite young and partly immature, the alcohol is a bit to snarky on the palate for 46% ABV. Therefore the finish is quite short although quite medium due to the smoke. For the initial taste you wouldn't mistake this malt for a GlenDronach (like they used to be in the sherry versions).

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 6/10
    • Nose
Port, smoke (quite some Islay TCP charakter), iodine, red fruits (cherrys and strawberries), blood oranges, cinnamon, some coffee in the back, menthol.
    • Taste
Sweet smoke, red fruits, unripe oranges, pepper, spices, the spirit is quite dominant.
    • Finish
Medium. Pepper, smoke, red fruits, cinnamon.

very tasty malt and very special for a glendronach. Despite the smokiness, the typical sherry is not neglected and is always present. Very tasty and balanced. Find the PLV very good with this malt.
    • Nose
Smoke, smoked ham and tobacco come through combined with sherry, old wet wood, very round, some herbs
    • Taste
slightly smoky, sherry, very spicy oak, slightly fruity mainly grapes and also the smoked ham
    • Finish
Smoky with sherry, spicy oak, somewhat sweet, here too the grapes, tobacco and smoked ham come

Well, it's okay, and it's cheap to boot. Is it really necessary when you're already a well-known and acclaimed distillery that's got nothing left to prove ? That's something else to discuss. It's kinda whacky, there's no integration of the various notes into a cohesive whole. I had better memories of the BR Solstice.
    • Nose
Some leather, hot butter, mushrooms (in that way it is similar to the regular peated Glendronach NAS) but with added touches of rubber and cherries ... but not very expressive on the port side methinks.
    • Taste
Kind of cellary with wine gums et red fruit jams, along with many forestian notes, damp earth, and smoke. There's no real harmony between all this I'm afraid, but the flavours stand out clear.
    • Finish
Leather, coal, light hints of red fruits again, and tobacco.

GlenDronach Peated Port Wood (6y Bourbon / 2 y Port), 46% Color: rose gold Nose: Peat (ashtray), vinous notes, toffee, strawberries Body: medium / oily Mouth: Alcohol well integrated, sweet fruit notes, some peat Finish: medium / long, mild, still sweet fruit notes mixed with mild wood notes, later ashtrays Conclusion: 80P, quite drinkable, but no comparison eg to BenRiach Solstice. Peat and portnotes rather reserved. Can not hide his young age.

    Room temperature when drinking: 26℃

Eyes: Orange with a hint of gray and fragrant Nose: medium peat, bacon, a little bit of pepper, a little plum sauce, green arrow mint, steamed cake, milk skin, rock sugar, a little fried salt, there is a certain amount Degree of coordination.
Taste Palate: dust, wood, weak pepper crush, basil leaves, a little bacon, Chinese herbal soup. The flavor is relatively light, with a certain astringency, and the bitter base is too obvious. Finish: short, dry. Wood, a little cream toast, bacon body: light, oily, no tannins, too heavy base

    Nose: 83.5/100
    Palate: 80/100
    Finish: 81/100
    Body: 83/100
    Overall: 81/100

Edit: Might have been a bit to hard on this one the first time around. I gave it 80 points. I would like to change that to 82 points. It's still not incredible, but it has opened up a bit after some time in the bottle and a bit of sweetness has come forth.

For me a peated whisky needs layers to work well- it needs those underlaying flavours of bacon, honeyglace, barbecue or sherry to make it something other than just smoke and ash.

This whisky doesn't have any of that. It lacks the trademark of that deep glendronach sherry and turns out to be a relatively simple and boring mouthful of smoke.

Doesn't taste bad. Just lacks depth.
