I am not a big fan of the peated whiskys on the mainland. Only Longrow is an exception.
    • Nose
      80 80
Smoke from a campfire, tobacco, fruity.
    • Taste
      82 82
Tones of peat smoke, tobacco, leather, vanilla. Not very interesting.
    • Finish
      80 80
The aftertaste seems very long due to the persistent smoke, but that is not it. No, not my whisky.

anCnoc Peatheart Heavily Peated HSMSW 46%.

30ml sample at home, June 2022.

Pale yellow with a slight green hue in this fading evening light.

Aroma is green banana – very underripe to the extent of being inedible, some seaweed, herbal almost like basil, beach pebbles covered in green stuff, hint of glue. Spirit-led, atypical, unique but not the most endearing.

Taste is salty but not that prickly on impact, the peat is always coastal-seeming, always salty and seasidey, some paper and a ‘white meat'-iness behind (seared pork steak?), not really ever getting that smoky as such – the peat is more salty and resinous, almost metallic.

Hardly any cask character but then this will be quite young. To be honest I prefer this 'honest' approach to any botched attempt to 'accelerate' maturation.

Blind I’d be thinking it’s a bit of an average young Caol Ila. It's bottled at a good strength, showing this young spirit in its best light. It's fine. The £52 asking price is simply too much in my opinion, given the quality of the competition, but you’re certainly not getting anything bad for your money here. 3.425/82

Stewed pineapple, banana, lemon custard, vanilla, marzipan, cloves, earthy peat. A couple of drops of water work wonders. This is very nice, reminds me a little of Caol Ila.

    Blind tasting

Oily in the glass, very light color, reminiscent of white wine.
I tapped on Islay (young Caol Ila or Lagavulin), possibly finish in a sweet wine barrel, for example. Moscatel and ABV of about 50%, and about 35ppm

The resolution as an Ancnoc really surprised me! ????
    • Nose
      86 86
When smelling, the alcohol stings refreshingly easily. Then light fruit, salt, smoky smoke
    • Taste
      87 87
The whisky tastes sweet, reminds me of apples and apricots. Slightly metallic teen. The smoke tastes slightly greasy here too.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is quite long and bright fruitiness and cold smoke remain after more than 10 minutes.

  27. Stanzeflasche scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A fine peat, very mineral and grainy, like pebbles sliding in the bed of a river. Cereals, wheat that dries in the sun, a discreet vanilla, some white fruits, grapes and mirabelle plums. In the mouth, it is a little light, but still the influence of bourbon, pepper and other spices rise slowly, to explode in a nice, suitably long finish. Lignite, fuel oil. Woody reflections to finish, with a little toffee. Fudge, sandalwood, heather earth.

    (Retry from a new bottle)

N- Open up well with bright sour citrus candy on layer of burnt butter, soft tar, paper ash and whiff of nail polish. Good strength right thru to the back of nose, pleasantly floral, citrus, orange and vanilla. (87/21)

P- Consistent with the bouquet, sweet smokes with gingery heat and whiff of nail polish on a floral sphere. Earthy, well rounded but narrow, may be it is how this was intended. (86/20)

F- Medium, ashy, gingery warm with fruity sweet, balanced and unoffensive despite heavily peated. (85/19)

B/B- 86/20, like the old "Cutter" better.

    Cereal- 2 / Fruity- 3 / Floral- 3 / Peaty- 2 / Feint- 1 / Sulphur- 1 / Woody- 2 / Winery- 2

    Fruity & Floral

The name already reveals that this malt is peated. 40ppm is actually heavily peated. I wonder if this malt will live up to its name. But will you look at that color: pale beyond belief.

The nose indeed immediately offers lots of peat. Smoke, earth, dried grasses and a bit of salinity. But once you get past this, the malt is surprisingly sweet, fruity and floral. I get vanilla, pear, apple, lime, some liquorice candy and Haribo bears. This is undoubtedly a very young malt.

I cannot hide it’s young age on the palate either. White fruit, pear drops, freshly cut grass, green earth with the spices that come with it – cardamom, ginger, pepper and salt, heather – followed by something that reminds me of a bouquet of flowers with violets and lilies. But it has to be said: it works.

The finish is medium long, floral and sweet with some fresh citrus at the death.

Not a bad AnCnoc, this Peatheart, but I did prefer the Peatlands release.

AnCnoc Peatheart is crisp and garden fresh. It’s like a small, gentle bonfire outside your backdoor whilst the flowers are in bloom and the birds call for spring (which I wish they would do more of currently). Whilst it’s quite a straight-forward whisky, it’s a very well-constructed one at the same time.

    • Nose
Bright and vibrant fruitiness – pears, green apples and tart citrus. All very orchard-like. These quickly become sweet – fruit gums, candy canes and pear drops, but are tempered by a wave of grassy smoke – akin to burning wet leaves or smouldering green twigs. There are touches of rubber and tar here as well as a delicate salinity. The addition of water brings out some vanillins as well as more tropical fruitiness in the form of pineapple and mango.
    • Taste
Full and oily with a rich sweet and peaty arrival. Starting again with fruitiness – very orchard, very citrus and then moving in burning green matter – fresh hay, reeds, grass, leaves etc. Earthy spice grounds both the sweet fruits and reasonably pronounced peatiness – peppers, salts, cardamom and soiliness – quite an interesting mix. In the back palette there are some floral inflections – violets, lilies and heatheriness as well as some overt drying oakiness. A few drops of water transmutes the sweetness away from fruitiness more towards toffee, and adds some gentle ginger.
    • Finish
Medium in length, quite tart with citrus and still presenting earthy, slightly floral peat.

N- Choking sweet and juicy citrus, tobacco smokes, walnut, cigarette butt, wood ashes. Generous dose of intense longan on retro-hale, delicious bouquet finely dressed with a peaty depth.

P- Rather anti-climax, missing the much needed fruitiness, were expecting more after the promising nosing. Rather flat with earthy spices sphere, but hollow in the middle. Well, a wee sample left in a big bottle, would have been oxidized when reached me. Shall try when the official bottle hit our shore.

F- Short, oily tarry rope, white pepper, leafy and black tea.

A damp cow barn, moldy, grassy peat, some citrus sweetness, a hint of oak and  saltiness, all very gently balanced. No peaks, just a fine combination of very different tastes, finish is medium long and the peat slightly lingers on for just a while. Fine dram!

Waxy apple, pear, vanilla, orange peel, cocoa and peat.
