Tasted with friends in a session including three Kilkerran 08 year old Cask Strength.

1.- 56.2% bottled 2017. Quite clean and compact. Some smoke. Nice solid dram. 85

    2. - 55.7% bottled 2017. Smoke and dirtiness are more present, providing a more complex and rounded sensation. 87

    3. - 56.5% bottled 2018. Very smooth. Smoked mixed with sweet nuts and whipped cream. Richer than the others. The winner of the session. 88

It seems the longer Kilkerran works, the better quality we will get. Hope they continue like this.

The Kilkerran 8 Year Old Cask Strength release was quite enjoyable. This is coming from someone still not totally used to Springbank funk yet. In trying the 3rd and final distillery from Campbeltown, it’s a lot of fun to see where they all stand. For my tastes, Springbank is the boldest of the three: The “Springbank funk” is potent and powerful and beyond that, there are quite a lot of flavors hitting throughout the dram. Glen Scotia feels like the most “refined” of the three. And Kilkerran (Glengyle Distillery) sits inbetween.

I appreciated the more controlled (less pungent) barnyard and funky notes on the nose. The palate’s balanced caramel and vanilla sweetness against the “Campbeltown / Springbank funk”, some earthy mustiness and oak and ginger, all made for a delicious dram this evening. I can’t wait to try more Kilkerran in the future.

Light funk, barnyard scents which hearkens back to the “Springbank funk” but nowhere near as potent, nor pungent. The cask strength ABV (56.2%) is still present and adds a slight burn on the nose, even after sitting 15 minutes before tasting. Tart green apples, faint sweetness.

Vanilla, caramel sweetness on the front palate, then a light antiseptic taste appears, Band-Aids, light Campbeltown funk. There’s a slight mustiness, warehouse dunnage, big ginger spice, but manageable. More vanilla, caramel notes, balanced by oak bitterness.

Medium. Lingering, balanced ginger heat. New wood furniture, dark chocolate bitterness that trails off.
