Whisky Reviews for Dailuaine 2004 CA

  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Typical younger bourbon aged whisky. Great nose, but in taste and finish it's just overly aggressive on alcohol and wood bitters. These components of the experience could really use some extra complexity.

Edit 25-03-2019: the second dram out of my sample and this has not improved. I'd say it has become even more bitter. The finish at this moment is downright unpleasant.

Fresh, sweet and sour but initially also rather closed. Water opens it up a good deal. Vanilla, sour apple, a little peach, canned fruit mix, icing sugar, honey, grassy, dusty wood. All in all really ok.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sharp and hefty on alcohol, quite oily, needs water and time. Develops into vanilla notes, fruitcake, oranges, grapefruit, white pepper and quite some wood bitters.
    • Finish
      78 78
Lingers in the short to mid range. Pretty one dimensional, dry, lots of bitter oak wood spices and some general honey like sweetness.

Top of the league Cadenhead stuff this is! I know Dailuaine as a very complex, fat bodied whisky which carries a loads of fresh, sweet and tropical fruits. And this one is keeping that image high!
    • Nose
Grapefruits, fresh grass, Peach. Great dense fatty smell. Bourbon wood. Beautiful, convincing stuff.
    • Taste
Fat, complex, full, evolving. It gives a creamy dairy butter note upon first arrival. Again the sweet grapefruits and peach, canned Peach i’d say. Some smoke going on inhere. Not peatsmoke, more like charred oak.
    • Finish
A long, Tingling feeling covers my mouth. Half way down it starts to feel silky. vanilla and wet wood. Then again there is that grassy note. This is a sensational dram for me!

I'm glad I bought a bottle of this together with the whisky friends! Excellent whisky to celebrate your anniversary. Good choice of Cadenhead.

What a beautiful nose! Sweet, sour a hawoning honey, some grassy and on top of that a thick layer of fruitiness. Many peaches and apricots. Really a good nose! Water is slightly flattening the nose, but it remains really good!

Here the alcohol is a little in the way of the experience. There is a lot of vanilla, peaches and a grassy nut. A deliciously creamy tropical note emerges with water.
    • Finish
      87 87
Pretty long length. Some dry and lime-like. Again a lot of fruit and some tropical fruit drink. A bit bitter. The bitter disappears with the addition of water.

Apple, citric, malty, vanillecustard, honey, Haribocandy (peach and apple), powdered sugar, tinned tangerine.

Malty, green apple, tinned tangerine, whiff of mint, peppery, powdered. Very smooth given the ABV

Quite long, bourbonbittery, powdered sugar, more sweet towards the end, vanille.

    Colour:
    Straw-yellow

    Odor:
Fresh fruity, green apple, wood, vanilla, grass.

    Taste:
Upon arrival sharp, peppery and bitter, and later sweet fruit, pear.
With some drops of water it all becomes a bit softer and the fruity comes up.

    Finish:
Medium long, sweet ripe fruit, vanilla, some drying, wood.

Although my preference is with sherry-matured, this is a nice bourbon-matured. Beautiful nose, spicy taste.

Rich nose: fruit, grassy. Here also apple, pear, a sweet fruit, pineapple or peach. Some spicy in the background.
    • Taste
      86 86
Bitter and fruity. With this the pepper is first and after that it becomes fruity. The apple and pear come back, banana, peach.
    • Finish
      88 88
Body & finish: Nice full and round, greasy, oily and thick. Small rough edge.

I bought this bottle in the Cadenhead shop in Edinburgh in the summer of 2018, after I was able to taste it first. The nose drew my immediate attention; the taste did the rest.

Some weeks ago I brought in the bottle in a tasting with my whisky friends, where it was the second one in the lineup. "What's this", one of them said immediately. "Wow" was another short remark.
Today I took some time to taste it in more detail. Would this be the first bottle in my collection to be rated with 90 points?
    Alea iacta est. 90 points.!
    • Nose

      Fruity, spicy.
    • Taste

      A bit thick; oil, wax.
    • Finish

      Medium long

    Cadenheads Tasting notes:

Nose: Meaty and malty with faint dry earthy notes. Grassy with red apple skins. The nose is drawing our attention on the tasting panel.
Palate: Faint lavender gives way to oranges, bananas and vanilla essence. With or with-out water this dram is amazing on the mid palate though most of us opted for no water then checked the ABV again and again it's really drinkable with 57.7% vol
Finish: Soft spice with dry herbal notes and still a touch earthy. The fruitiness we had on the mid palate is still here but gliding away to this richness that reminded a few of the whisky bonds full of ageing whisky.
