[May, 2018]  I am always curious to try a new Strathisla (single cask) bottling because this distillery sometimes produces very unusual and interesting flavour profiles.  Not to everybody's liking, for sure - but always entertaining... So let us check this bottle that I bought for 89 Euro just recently.

Actually this is exactly what I looked for tonight:  An unusual and interesting dram with individual characteristics (something Strathisla is known for).  It is worthwhile to try but you should check a sample first before buying a whole bottle!

PS:  I just read the official tasting notes on the bottle and the only word I can comprehend is humbug (what in the german language means "nonsense").  I really wonder what the ambition of these professional tasting note writers is finally, sometimes...
    • Nose
      87 87
The colour is pale gold and the texture shows a sticky ring that slowly moves downward but refuses to build tears. The nose offers exactly such an interesting profile I hoped for with nice fruits (apples, peaches), barley sugars, some fruity chewing gum aromas (you remember MAOAM?) together with floral and spicy notes. It is not bold and rather shy but I like it.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is about the same profile but richer than the nose and it really invites you to chew the dram for some time. More sugars pop up after a while and pave the way into the medium to long finish. Water releases more citric flavours both in the nose and on the palate but the finish turns more bitter and somewhat astringent. More water smoothes that again but it flattens the nose and taste. So it is fine to nose it with some water added but I prefer to drink it neat.
    • Finish
      86 86
The spirit arrives a little hot and peppery in the mouth but it coats the whole of it nicely (like the fat texture promised). No distracting moments beside the little hotness from the high abv (55.8%). The finish is very spicy on wooden flavours and a little bitter from the tannins (but this is bearable - lovers of modern style wood-driven whiskies might even enjoy this). The fruits and sugars are still there but now the wood takes control.

Given 20 minutes in the glass and half teaspoon of water. Nose: That fresh grass lawn and hay smell that seems to be characteristic of older Strathisla, with perhaps a faint Haribo fruitiness. Very enjoyable trying to figure out what I’m smelling … is that high-pitched note cellophane? Or high-pitched warehouse/dunnage wood dank? It’s not unpleasant if it is … Fresh hay wrapped in cellophane. Mouth: Small sip = Perfect deep savory toffee hit. Beautiful. But can it be replicated? Medium sip = a flavor explosion. Flavor overload … a bourbon cask version of a sherry bomb. Keep to smaller sips. With another half teaspoon water and at around 30 min from pour, small sip, Really Nice. Clean toffee flavour … good development of flavor with 2 or 3 different phases. Beautiful. Then, as an experiment, I added an almost equal proportion of the OB Strathisla 12 (instead of more water). Instantly got a grapefruit/blood orange note on nose … interesting: that high pitch cellophane note has become tart grapefruit juice (though well in the background). Strathisla can be very variable! And capable of a special deep, savory note.

An interesting, delicious bourbon matured Strathisla.
    • Nose
Floral. Lot of fruits, honey, caramel and spicy oak.
    • Taste
Powerful and spicy. Fruits, vanilla pudding, citruses, oak and pepper.
    • Finish
      Long, sweet, spicy.

    Official tasting notes:

Nose: Raspberry ripple ice cream, mint humbugs, tangerines and faintly medicinal.

Palate: Vanilla custard, flaked almonds, sesame seeds, lemon icing and green grapes.

Finish: Poppy seeds, vanilla sponge cake with a faint drying spice.
