Color: dark amber, tending to brown
Fantastic sherry bomb, whisky full of flavor, to be enjoyed from the first to the last sip. Alcohol perfectly managed on the nose, more aggressive in the mouth, but with a few drops of water it becomes docile and manageable.
    • Nose
Very intense aroma of candied orange, nutmeg, chocolate, liqueur cherries.
    • Taste
Sweet and intense flavor, very greedy, opulent, notes of mon cheri, ripe cherries, creamy 70% dark chocolate
    • Finish
Long, sweet, opulent, chocolaty finish with a hint of coffee.

Aberlour A'Bunadh Batch 60. 60.3% alc. Original bottling. Ageing: Sherry casks (Oloroso)

Nose: Fudge, orange marmalade and raisins, at least that's the first impression. Creamy sweet and pleasantly spicy. I smell figs, morello cherries and dates, some furniture polish and old attic in midsummer. Also a little mild coffee next to caramel. The first impression is complemented by very delicate roasted aromas, milk chocolate and minimal pepper.

Palate: Dark chocolate fruit, especially cherries and oranges. In addition black currants, raisins and black tea. After that, the whisky becomes a little calmer, the sweetness remains. Apple pie with cinnamon and coffee, some ginger.

Finish: Medium to long, sweet and creamy, but also significantly spicier than on the palate. Cinnamon, cloves, cherry jam and cedarwood.

Conclusion: Just a great experience. This cask strength Aberlour is simply wonderfully complex, and despite the lack of an age statement, it already has a certain depth of aroma, a very nice single malt. 88/100 points (2022)

    Nose: malt, honey, varnish, caramel.
Taste: Mild flavor. However, it's a bit one-dimensional. Bit of sweets, some sherry with tea elements and basically that's it.
Rating: 87 | 100 Finish rather short with a sweet touch.

Aberlour Abunadh batch #60 VS Aberlour 9-year-old CA 55,1%

to begin with - this is not a fair match. the abunadh is not even close to getting where the cadenhead bottling is. the abunadh shows a nice direction but the trip ends very fast. the casks used here were not the fanciest ones unfortunately. after the first three seconds in your mouth everything goes downwards. not even the high abv of over 60% can help it. although, one must mention that the high abv does not feel as too much. still, no complexity, waters down in your mouth very fast and finished rather disappointing.

and then there is the cadenhead bottling :) oh my god how beatiful this whisky is. the nose gives you gummibears and sweet wet oak with artificial banana flavours. the cask(s) used here must have been very active and wet as november. just a gorgeous dram. it is very sad that i only have this one sample of it. if there is a possibility for you to get a bottle you should :)
    • Nose
      86 86
nuts and moncheri. glue and nail polish. milk chocolate. brown sugary sweetness. vanilla and spices, maybe cloves? there are some fruits but hide in the background.
    • Taste
      83 83
sherry strong in the beginning but disappears and becomes watery fast. rather flat unfortunately. maybe some fruit tea? but not the tea taste you get from old whiskies. ok but a bit boring.
    • Finish
      82 82
rather short for this abv. bit young and oaky. not bad but rather mediocre...

    Fresh & Sweet

Not too long ago Aberlour launched their a’bunadh Alba, matured on bourbon casks, as an extension (or is that replacement?) of the a’bunadh that is matured exclusively on Spanish sherry casks. The last batch of the latter – batch 66 – appeared in november 2019. I was able to secure a sample of batch 60 from 2017 and will keep some water at hand.

It’s a lot more fresh and sweet than the previous batch I tried (batch 22 from 2007) with lots of red fruit, but also toffee apples and candied oranges. A hint of chocolate and lots of herbal notes like rotting plants (not an off-note). Adding water gives molded wood and detracts some of the sweetness.

Nicely creamy on the palate. Immediately a lot of caramel and raisins, but also cough syrup and liquorice. Only then does the fruit shine: orange peel, dried apricots, almonds and plums. Feisty though. Adding water makes it a bit sharp and more outspoken.

The finish is deliciously long and goes from citrus fruit to nuts and back, only to end in a note of bitter, dry oak.

This is the 13th batch I tried and while I am not superstitious, it’s one of the lesser gods – but still a great whisky!

Candied cherry, orange, blackberry, cashew and a herbal touch of cough pastils. Water makes it considerably lighter: Peach and apple.

Orange, cashew, caramel, blackberry, raisin and Ricola. Liquorice when adding water.

Aromas of prunes, chocolate, hazelnuts, orange peel.
    • Taste

The high alcohol percentage is quite present, but don't bother. Chocolate, fruity, pepper, toffee and espresso.
    • Finish
      87 87
A wonderfully long and fruity aftertaste. Also notes of chocolate, dried fruit and spices.

I know not everyone agrees but I think this REALLY needs some water to open up. Or time, maybe, but I'm not the patient type. This is, as you'd expect, full of fudge, sultanas, dark chocolate, vanilla, coconut and toasted oak.

  22. ConvalRen scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Sherry, what else is there. Consistent yet enjoyable. Just don't expect too much.

  23. Whisky.Hedonist.MY scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Yet another batch, quality still there, still your typical Abunadh. Consistently above average, but lacks excitement.

  24. diamond2000 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

Aroma: at first it is slightly closed, giving out lacquer-wood tones, then raisin-wine notes, dried sour-sweet berries, tobacco leaf, gouache, ground coffee. Wood is revealed by old furniture, a humidor, a charred piece of wood, malt notes slightly in the background - vanilla pastries, granola.

Taste: bright, sweet-spicy, red pepper, ground cinnamon, prunes, dark raisins and astringent peel from it, espresso, spicy wood, herbal liquor.

Finish: longer than average, tingling spices, oak playing with different colors (furniture, varnish, bark, resin of fruit tree), cherry jam, tobacco leaf, coffee, oily.

    Rating: 89

Bottom line: excellent us from Aberlauer, powerful, multifaceted, with an amazingly long finish!

Fine herringman in aroma and extremely ascetic to taste. To taste is interesting, it is not very comfortable to taste.
    • Nose
      89 89
Pretty intense, degree felt, marinade, paints, varnish, rum, tropical notes, sweet sherry, dessert aromas, creamy irises, raisins, milk chocolate, marshmallows, caramel, honey, vinegar, dried fruit, coffee notes, dust, woodwork, marzipan, wormwood, prunes.
    • Taste

Sweets, oak, sherry, citrus, pepper, dried fruits, harsh.
    • Finish

Sweet; Syrup; Molasses; Sherry; Fruit; Alcohol hardly noticeable; Caramel; Orange / citrus, which note becomes even more intense and clearer with water
    • Taste
sharp; spicy; Oak / cinnamon; some ginger; orange zest; Coffee Chocolate almond mix; peppery pungency; The oak note brings along the coffee and the dark chocolate; a dash of water intensifies the citrus note, becomes slightly tart and the barrel looks great
    • Finish
Sherry; citrus; Oak; Chocolate almond coffee; stays long in the mouth with sherry and spice

An impulse purchase at a tax free, I’m glad to see Abunadh is still a whisky I enjoy, yet even with a good amount of water it retains a hot, sharp feel on the tongue, which I’m not fond of. It remains a good buy in the relatively cheap sherrybombs category, and the dreaded sulphur is in check, at least in this bottle. I prefer this to the Glendronach CS batches of late (b7 83 pts.)

Nice A’bunadh, sherry half-bomb. Sweet, tasty, needs dilution. The only disadvantage that balance is a bit on the oaky side.
    • Nose
Sweet, sherry, cardamom, raisins, dusty notes, caramel, oranges, damp wood, water amplifies caramel and releases fruit candies and honey notes
    • Taste
Sweet, gingery, apricots and ripe pears, apple pie, lemon zest, berry marmalade
    • Finish
Medium-long, sweet, a bit oaky, leathery notes, mild spices

What a beautiful dram. This was my first A'Bunadh and I will definitely be buying a few different batches. If they're anywhere near this good then I've got myself a new favorite medium-budget non-peated whisky.
    • Nose
Beautiful strong nose with a lot of Oloroso influences; raisins, dates and figs with dark chocolate and some marzipan
    • Taste
My goodness, that mouthfeel. It's creamy, it's full-bodied, it's delicious! Again the sweet dried fruits and the bitter dark chocolate come to the front in an incredible way. Some spicy oakiness lingers on the background together with a touch of ginger and orange zest.
    • Finish
Really strong finish, it lingers on and on, with that dark chocolate and spicy, sherried oak covering the palate.
