    Glenrothes - 10yr - Cask # 5469 - 67.1% - Exclusively bottled to celebrate Abbey Whisky's 10th Anniversary.

    Appearance: Golden pine. Long & speedy oily legs

    Nose: An unadulterated abundance of fireside toffee & runny caramel with a really faint hint of coconut 'bounty bar' at the back. The initial reaction is that if a confectionary made a whisky, this would be it. Once you've stepped out of the sweet shop, there's a tart fruit note, like cherries and rhubarb. In fact, rhubarb and custard sweets really comes through now. Back into the sweet shop we go then ...

    Once the candy-store hit has had its way with you, there's lots of sweet sherry and sticky wine to be had. The whole thing is so luxuriously candied and caramel-infused, you'd be forgiven if you just wanted to smell it for an hour. And that would be easy, as there's very little, if any, alcohol burn on the nose at this bold 67.1% ABV. I'll try not to use the phrase Xmas cake, so I'll say rich and moist Dundee Cake instead and be done with it.

    Palate: Sweetness is so in your face it's ridiculous. Fire cracker caramel that's been laced with popping candy coats the whole mouth, tattoos the tongue, and leaves a sweet and oily layer that drapes itself over everything. This is a whisky for people with a sweet tooth and who like caramel-drenched desserts and sticky toffee pudding.

    No water in my glass by the way - it really doesn't  need it (for me). In fact, the last time I had a whisk(e)y of this strength that didn't need water, was a George T Stagg at almost 70% ABV.  It's all about the flavor here, and the ABV really does not get in the way and ruin it. In fact, the strength seems to provide a great platform for the flavors to roll-up and appear one after the other.

    Finish: Sweet and long. The sweetness fades to a light bitter fizz, and then moves over to a more mellowed burnt-sweetness.  

    Conclusion: Pretty fantastic. Utterly sweet with bold liquid caramel and everything naughty.

    Totally recommended. Be warned though - it's very strong and very drinkable. Just keep an eye on that level in the bottle!

    Selected by the Mike "The Cask Whisperer" Sharples at Abbey Whisky, this is one I'll remember, and at under £ 70 for this single cask, I'd give it a Godzilla-sized thumbs-up in the value vs quality stakes. Roarrr.

      Like opening a fresh shortbread package, buttery and rich notes of vanilla pour in with a touch of salt - so typical of Glenrothes since the late-'80s expansion. Dark creamy salt caramel, cane sugar and lightly roasted hazelnuts underline the sweet and oily-heavy biscuit impression. The longer you sniff, the more sherry aromas develop gradually. First and foremost moist and sweet pipe tobacco, sulphured dried apricots, raisins and spicy prunes. Even after ten years, the oak wood on tap brings with it powerful tart notes, which blend wonderfully into the otherwise rather sweet overall picture. Spices such as cinnamon bark, nutmeg and cloves I perceive discreetly. Despite the over 67% alcohol, there is hardly anything in the nose. Water makes everything a bit milder and rounder without watering down. In the nose of this Glenrothes ever big movie!
    • Taste
      Hot, warm and sweet, the spectacle continues impressively on the palate. Continuing warming ginger sharpness combined with the oily sweet tart notes, rich vanilla and salted butter form the basic structure here. On top of that, very full and spicy aromas from the sherry barrel are built up again without dominating. Light spices, dark dried fruits and raisins here as well. More than in the nose comes here still the primitive Glenrothes kick with its quite earthy-dingy note. Spicy forest honey and slightly astringent malt push even more sweetness forward, clear wood notes of the oak dampen the oncoming panic against tooth decay and bring a nice bitter dryness. With such young whiskys, I am rather reserved with the addition of water, as it is not unusual that unpleasant junk notes are pressed forward, which could not be turned off or aromatically during the short storage, but here, too, only a little water leaves everything beautifully continue to bloom and take the alcohol cutting sharpness.

      In the finish, he pulls despite the relatively young age really long and is still oily and it remains here again especially buttery notes of vanilla, some dark dried fruit, oak and sweet malt.

    Certainly not a filigree and restrained malt. No kicker. The rather suggests the loud sounds. But he does that really well for his age. But you must not object to the Glenrothes notes, because they are also present here.

      Toffifee. Nougat. Eiskonfekt. Plum cake. Rum raisins. Some wine gum. In addition the Glenrothes muff. A certain cooling note is also present, which is probably due to the high alcohol content. But for this alcohol strength really relatively pleasant.
      With water of course much more set but also fuller.
    • Taste
      In the mouth, the alcohol is hidden then not so. Since later, a few drops of water can certainly not hurt. A lot of sweetie. Fudge. Cocoa butter. Biscuit. Fruits cream sweets. Slightly mossy notes. Then sharpness of the alcohol, which neatly rummages on the tongue.
      With water then really caramel. Not just the taste, but also the mouthfeel.

      Continue caramel. Add some spicy oak and it gets a bit drier. Modriges wood.

    Rather well made. Glenrothes isn't one of my favourites because of the bread and sulphur notes usually found in their whisky. But this one is quite magnificent.

      Sweet and laced with red fruits. As usual with Glenrothes there is some bready note here. Although there isn't much sulphur in here, if any. There is really a lot of sweetness in the nose, probably more if diluted a bit.
      With water: More floral notes come up, but yet it stays rather similar.

      Sweet, powerful and warm. Loads of sherry notes, little leather and dark chocolate notes. And again the clear Glenrothes French bread notes are there too.
      With water: This one becomes more oily and fatty. I really like the mouth feel of this one. Tastewise it all opens up more. Some better red fruit influences and less of the bready notes.

      Long length. A true sweet. Not much to add on the taste sensations as in the nose and taste. They just all pass by.
      With water: Pretty similar.

    that's fierce for 10y; must have been good barrels has the typical Glenroth notes I like him

      without: malt, vanilla, later caramel, raisins, sherry and sweetness of it, slightly musty, slightly chemical / sulfur, the alcohol is something to feel with: fat vanilla !!!, Toffe, the mustiness is gone, typical sweetness, clove

      oily and powerful on the palate without: caramel, oak, spicy, sweet then harsh, slightly musty with: softer, caramel with a delicate spice
    • Finish
      medium to long Oak, sherry, sweet and bitter in the change

    Very punchy - water is really needed - the buttery notes are quite special while it is not really like butterscotch

      Intense, fresh sherry, very buttery, nutty, citrus fruits, hints of fresh rubber, whiffs of vanilla

      Punchy, oily, butter caramels, toasted bread, lemons, little sweetness, oak wood, hints of leather couch

      Water recommended: More buttery and fruity acids
