The whisky pretty much does a lot right. Complex, just the right alcohol strength and a long finish. I would have wished for a little more fruitiness than the 21-year-old, but that's complaining on a high level.
    • Nose
      90 90
Solvent at the very beginning, then honey and spices. A little sour and clearly maritime associations. Peach, bread, vanilla, salt and later chocolate.
    • Taste
      89 89
Starts sweet and soft, then becomes more spicy and the maritime notes come back. Honey and salt. The alcohol is well integrated.
    • Finish
      90 90
Very long finish. Now smoke also appears more clearly. Also spicy, slightly bitter. Pepper, malt and nut. Still well integrated alcohol.

Strong saturated coffee, dark chocolate, has clear cognitive profile
    • Nose
Coffee, Toffee, light bitter, wood, black berries, black chocolate, vanilla, cocoa, chicory, dark honey, chocolate icecream
    • Taste
Coffee, light spices, dark chocolate, Toffee, black berries, middle lenght
    • Finish
Long, spices, light bitter, coffee, dark chocolate

    tasted as a blind sample.

Nice, old school nose, but not overwhelming. Hints of smoke, no peat smoke.

Warming and charming in the mouth, quite some smokey wood, sherry and bourbon wood. No off notes, not that complex, but easy quaffable.

    Medium short finish.

All in all, not a stunner for me. Old Pulteney is not my preferred cup of tea.

  11. Calmar scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A very pleasant, smooth, well-balanced whisky, there is also a breadth of palette and depth, a harmony of oak, salt, sweet-creamy and industrial notes.
    • Nose
Discreet, moist, bright woody and mineral-salty shades, carpentry, light lacquer notes, wool, creamy caramel tones, green grass, lemon wedge in tea, coated tablets.
    • Taste
Calm, rich, sweet-creamy notes, framed by spicy wood, a little varnish, bark astringency, salty-mineral tones, more industrial notes in development, acrid mineral shades, radish, light smoky echoes.
    • Finish
Soft, warming, oak, lemon peel in tea, creamy candy motifs with an admixture of mineral-salty and nutty notes, fondant, mineral water, ash.

  13. Lu Cifer scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      89 89
Slight smoky note, aromatic with fruit and sherry, delicate prune aroma, hint of vanilla, cedarwood note.
    • Taste
      90 90
light start with tingling on the tongue, warm, spicy, with a trace of smoke, wood notes - not necessarily oak…. Somewhat different ... cedar wood note! Aromatic, slightly fruity and sweet.
    • Finish
      89 89
Sweetish-tart with warm smoke and wood notes, trace astringent with tannins then soft, sweet and slightly malty, very long with a little smoke.

  14. DistiLesha scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Not a bad example, but the smoky finish somehow didn't sew the button accordion to the goat, in my opinion. Water makes the situation worse, so don't use Opalescence with water is also present.
    • Nose
Oily, grainy, pearl barley, wet paper, prunes, citrus fruits, caramel sweetness, raspberries.
The water accentuated the malt-pearl tones, traces of the soles of old leather boots appeared.
    • Taste
Citruses, spices, pungency, vanilla, light and elegant peat smoke, rich mulberry, bright.
Water makes most of the brightness, rather worsened the taste.
    • Finish
      Tannin-smoky, slightly astringent and long-lasting

  15. Kovalyoff scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

At 46% it sounds very complex ...

Too much oak. An attempt to correct by an additional extract in a peat barrel only brought chaos to the aroma.

  17. ctu scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Quite weird and grotesque Pulteney, but very good.
    • Nose
Floral. Herbals, salted minerals, vanilla, musty cellar and pistachio.
    • Taste
Peat, dry wood, citruses, melon, vanilla and salted caramel.
    • Finish
      Long, oaky, spicy.

  18. Igitor scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

The nose is very nice, even if it is not so full. The peaty barrels at the end were obviously intended for pimping.

    The finish is really great
    • Nose
      88 88
At the beginning light smoke, dust, salt, removed plum, herbs (thyme), light malt
    • Taste
      89 89
Honey, light herbs, sage, distilled sherry, malt. The peat is only perceptible from a distance
    • Finish
      91 91
Long, beautiful finish with lots of cream without bitterness

  19. Dris scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

One of the best Pulteneys I've ever had... maybe ever will?
Haven't gotten this deer roasted nuttiness from this distillery before. The unusual cask combination is spot on, definitely adds substance to the mature aromas.

    • Taste
      90 90
Creamy, oily, raisins, sourdough, orange juice, limes, honey, caramel sweets, chocolate truffles, vanilla, round and delicious
    • Finish
      89 89
Long, warming, vanilla, a touch of ginger, a lot of caramel, some oak and chocolate

  21. wako93 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Very maritime malt. Salty and herbal notes. Both the notes of bourbon (vanilla, caramel) and the sherry come through (rather nutty and creamy). The whole thing is carried by the beautiful smoke.

  22. domani scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A typical Old Pulteney, maritime, salty, with expressive notes of wood and herbs, the delicate smoky note is a pleasant companion and variety at the same time. Compared to the 23-year-old, I find it a bit too overstrained, especially the acidic component stands out to me a bit too much. Nonetheless a beautiful entangled Old Pulteney - 28.06.2019
    • Nose
Very maritime and salty, yeast, sourdough, full citrus and orange aroma, the bitterness of lemon ice, in the background is some toffee and vanilla, also a bit sour with a slight tendency to turpentine or solvent, the delicate-smoky bacon flashes every now and then, roasted pine nuts and pistachio
    • Taste
First impression is fruity-sweet and maritime smoky flavor, mandarin, honeydew melon, ginger, fresh herbs, the barrels are immediately present, spicy, dry beech wood, bad olive oil, vitamin sweet, absolutely interwoven, salty
    • Finish
      Lang

  23. FuturePerfect scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

    • Nose

Fresh (morning dew, gooseberry) and flowery.
    • Taste
      86 86
Significantly smoother (charcoal, bacon), light sweetness remains.
    • Finish
      85 85

  24. ARDBERG scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Textbook Pulteney with a nice smoky note that I would rather put to wood smoke than peat smoke.

Would love to have this CS, 46% tame it down too much imho. Still a nice dram but with a stupid price.

    Tasted at the whisky club.

The logical continuation of the 23-year-old 1990s, who has also experienced a finish in barrels in which previously tormented whisky was. The proximity to this unusual for Pulteney bottling is clearly greater than the 25-year-old Pulteney. Obviously not only the 25-year-old was finished, but rather the barrels of the 23-year-old 1990s have been matured for a few years. Anyway, this Pulteney is characterized by a very clear flavor presentation with a basic freshness.
    • Nose
      93 93
Very coastal! Herbs, salt, a very fresh sea breeze. Behind the coastal flavors, the Burbon Fassaromen, vanilla, sherry and the plump peatyness show up. The relationship to the 23-year-old 1990s is clearly greater than that of the new 25-year-old Pulteney.
    • Taste
      92 92
In the mouth of this Pulteney comes immediately very coastal and now the peat notes are equal in the foreground. Unusual for a Pulteney and more intense than the 23-year-old 1990s variant. The fine, yet intense (2. Jugend!) Altersprickeln comes to it and the longer the malt is in the glass, the more intense in the second wave, the sherry and Bourbon Fassaromen and some hard-polished wood.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finale also remains maritime-peaty, the wood is now more pronounced, the age-sherry aromas are also present. Herbs and salt prove the origin. Dense, very dense.
