  1. Totoro scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

    First-fill sherry? Fino or what? Well, at any rate, the cask's previous contents have not messed with the Caol Ila distillate, which stands front and center here.

    Hugely herbal, marine, yeasty, farmy, and savory nose, with onions, cow dung, olive brine, seaweed, clams/oysters and sweet peat. Coastal, crystalline and unadulterated. Very autumnal and smoke-forward. Perhaps some additional vanillin and nuttiness in the background.

    Peppery and spicy on the palate, with some sweetness: honeyed herbal cough lozenges. Also: smoked fish and quite some farminess. Good if you're into straight peat, but not overly complex. Finishes on pepper and herbal peat smoke.

    I see how you could ramble on about this approximating the "essence" of Caol Ila or something like that, but I find this a tad too straightforward and simple. Nice enough, but nothing special in my book.

    Another solid Caol Ila, but one that isn't likely to take your breath away. What would we fans of peat do without this reliable workhorse churning out loads of this lovely juice year after year?
    • Nose
      Faintly rubbery and vinegary at first, then some smoked salmon, faint gasoline and white dessert wine. Not overpoweringly sherried, but definitely different from the usual refill bourbon profile of CI.
    • Taste
      A big, bold body with a good amount of sherry, more so than on the nose. Heavily sooty. It's certainly powerful, but something is lacking in the whole, as it feels a tad too simple and straightforward for me to get superlative on it.
    • Finish
      Some oak, sweet tar, fino sherry, and saltiness, with a side of menthol.

  3. Malthead19 scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    - a super aromatic fruity Caol Ila
    - not comparable in taste to a "standard"
    Caol Ila, much less smoke and more
    Fruit flavors
    - € 70 issue price was okay here
    • Nose
      dry, intense sherry note, hardly any smoke
    • Taste
      oW: intense, strong sherry attack, oak, cherry, very easy to drink pure;

      mW: almost unchanged in taste, rather loses character, I find it better without water despite 52.6%
    • Finish
      medium-long, soft finish;
      long, dry, fruity aftertaste with a light smoke aroma

    A very idiosyncratic, but also a very good malt!
    I would not have guessed only sherry barrels!
    [Color] = straw;
    • Nose
      Smoke, herbs, lemons, oranges, sherry, sweetness, slightly alcoholic, spice;
    • Taste
      quite sharp start, smoke, pepper, a lot of salt, citrus (lemon, orange), sweetness, constant smoke, peat, iodine, herbs, oak;
    • Finish
      almost long finish, creamy, sweet, ice candy, menthol, brine in the finish;

    If I get lost in pictures like in my full review (in German): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/01/28/ein-trio-caol-ila/ that it is a good sign for good stuff. That is the case here. Absolutely awesome s***. If you consider what it retailed for (65 €) ... the current secondary market price (110 €) is probably still completely ok.
