Is there anything more certain than old Caol Ila?

N: Sea spray, butterscotch, kippers, brine, lemon, old tires, ash

P: Smoke, lemon, ash, salted caramels, oily

F: Long, ashy, toffee, tar, lemon, buttery

A fantastically good Caol Ila. As a matter of fact, this might well be the best I've had to date. The average WB score for this one is absolutely incomprehensible *in my opinion*, it places it among the worst 80's Caol Ila while I personally think it is the opposite. And it used to be worse than that (~89.08 at time of writing but I remember that at the beginning it was in the low 88's, probably an influencing effect of the first raters). All in all its is especially fruity and very low on peat, and I think it is very clever from Cadenhead to pick this one to represent how well Caol Ila's peat can transmutate in fruits. That said, I could see why some peat lovers would prefer other Caols to this one, indeed. 92+

Achtung : this is superb ! Very fruity for a Caol Ila, even for an old one. Fresh mango and pineapple are just unmistakable. A typical smell of rubber boots (often found in late 70's - early 80's CI in my opinion) comes afterwards, with diesel and brine. So typical, so good. It gets incredibly refined after that, with a whole theme on almond milk and orange blossom. Almond soufflé. The fruity register gets more acidulated with time, with juicy red currants for example. It keeps getting more superb and refined, with incredible notes of lightly smoked almond milk and oil cloth.

Superb presence : great oily texture and great alcohol integration. It is maybe a bit less exuberantly fruity than the nose was but it still very nice. It begins a bit peatier than the nose suggested but still with very fine and integrated smoke, almond milk again, wet sand, then evolves on a Sauvignon-like fruitiness before getting back to more vegetal territories, but still with that orange blossom feeling. On the last drops, the fruits are more present, like a fruit-stuffed rice pie. Excellent, but maybe a little less than the amazing nose (spoiler : and finale).

Transitions with some raw mushrooms and mango and then gets super clean on mineral notes, with a looooot of limestone (typical CI indeed), still a bit of almond milk, and then gets absolutely MA-GNI-FI-CENT with all the freshest citrus fruits and kiwis (especially !) you could dream of. It is absolutely mesmerizing how realistic the feeling of lime juice and mandarines is represented here. What an incredible freshness ! This is a baffling finale. Actually I don't know if I've already had such an amazing finale in anything before. Well ...

A good Caol Ila. I prefer the more dirty style in Caol Ilas to be honest. This is very fresh and clean, even slightly Chemical. But of course. Caol Ila is normally good, this is no exception

Caol Ila moneralic, but not Heavy. Slightly peaty. Eventually more salty and yet fresh. Chemical. Old cellar. Camphor- Farmy.
