    In order to change the taste of Glenfiddich in a unique way, a special craft beer Indian Pale Ale was developed. For the Edition IPA, the well-known single malt received a finish in the beer barrels from the Speyside Brewery.

    Underwhelming as an example of beer cask finish, try Säntis malt instead, for example. Otherwise an inoffensive dram.
    • Nose
      55 55
      Not much beer to speak of, perhaps the oak has a silky hop undertone, and treacley burned overtone? A young Glenfiddich otherwise with grassy notes to the fore
    • Taste
      40 40
      Either the beer cask finish was of insufficient length or the barrel overused but the imbued properties remain weak, matched with the somewhat insipid spirit the taste is remarkably hollow
    • Finish
      45 45
      Dry biscuits and dried sherries fruit. Short and sweet

    [August, 2019] I do not like Indian Pale Ale beer at all - so the question is: Do I like a whisky finished in IPA casks?

    No, I do not like it either. This experiment surely failed as the IPA casks contributed almost nothing to the whisky which smells and tastes just like an ordinary young Glenfiddich, hence not remarkable.
    • Nose
      82 82
      The colour is pale gold and the nose is that of a standard Glenfiddich. I am not sure if the IPA added anything to this nosing profile but after some breathing time I smell something that could be a whiff of beer (beer itself does not smell that much, doesn't it?). To be honest, this is a boring nose (but it is not flawed).
    • Taste
      83 83
      The taste again shows no flavours of the beer cask even after significant chewing (or maybe my taste buds are dull tonight). It tastes exactly like a young standard Glenfiddich hence rather underwhelming. There are no obvious flaws but there is nothing else either that I will remember by tomorrow morning.
    • Finish
      81 81
      The initial mouthfeel is completely unimpressive - neither warming nor coating but with a minor astrigent moment (tannins). The finish is short and adds no new impressions. It gets a little dry towards the end what was expected from the initial mouthfeel already. Water is not needed as it just flattens the dram.

    An interesting malt with a rather unusual finish;
    • Nose
      slightly fruity, spicy (oak?); tart aromas (from hops?);
    • Taste
      spicy (from beer keg?), slightly sweetish, hints of vanilla; hardly any fruit; Oak / spice dominates!
    • Finish
      short finish; long bitter bitter aftertaste;

    Hops

    Glenfiddich introduced the so-called Experimental Series, in which the classic malt gets an extra twist. In the case of the first release, the Glenfiddich IPA, the company asked the Speyside Craft Brewery to create and Indian Pale Ale. The beer itself it not for sale, but was made especially for Glenfiddich. The beer impregnated the casks for several month, after which the cask was shipped to the distillery. Glenfiddich finished its whisky for 12 weeks and this is the result.

    On the nose – which is quite spicy – I get notes of vanilla, leather, almonds, chocolate and fresh hops. I had never had the latter in a whisky before, but since it matured on beer casks, that should not come as a surprise. Very pleasant nose, actually.

    It is very soft upon arrival, although the spices quickly rear their heads. Baked apples, chocolate and some coffee, but soon a hint of dark beer emerges again. That, of course, was the goal, so this is certainly a successful experiment.

    In the medium long finish in which the coffee and chocolate linger, a slight bitterness from the beer re-emerges in a lovely fashion.

    A fun and very quaffable Glenfiddich, which is also very affordable. I am a fan.

    The scent is overwhelming. Taste and finish less strong but satisfying.
    • Nose
      90 90

    experience to bring fervent beer fanatics to whisky?
    • Nose
      pronounced spices, malt, a little "hops"
    • Taste
      spices, it stings, it curls on the palate, a little vanilla, woody scents, little fruity, on the apple.
    • Finish
      short to medium and on the same scents.

  19. Gldflo scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    Nose: It's clearly round, we find a scent of chocolates filled with almond paste

    In the mouth: The attack is sweet, in line with the nose, the "chocolate" takes over

    The finale: Surprisingly long, beautiful bitterness on the end similar to that of IPA beers (without the fruity side) with notes of coffee and dark chocolate.

    In summary: an atypical whisky with a marked influence of the IPA cask. A very good value for money. 85/100

    Absolutely great experiment. You can easily get to the hoppy notes from the IPA. Highly interesting stuff.
