This is a prototypical "Islay Mystery Malt". While I am not a fan of NAS whisky, if it is good value for the money I have no problem with it. This whisky is definitely in that category as an Islay cask strength for under $50. This is very much a spirit driven whisky because of its young age. That spirit is bold, bright, and clean. Showing the quality of the new make is very good indeed.
Nice full smoke experience, no iodine, not medicinal. Campfire smokey. Alcohol is noticeable but settles down with time in the glass. With water becomes more balanced with perhaps honey notes?
Neat is a smack right in the chops (58% abv after all) but in a pleasant way with nice smokey peat just like the nose. Oily, coats the mouth nicely and tingles the sides of the tongue. Add water, (it is able take to quite a bit) let it sit for 5 minutes and it becomes rounder, little alcohol bite and much sweeter with a little fruit, honey notes in the background. Not complex but hearty. Very nice.
Long finish with the smoke just lingering around stating I'm not going anywhere just yet. Then gradually fades. Again very nice.
