Probably the best sample of OP I've tried, however, I feel like it started to decrease in descending order.
    • Nose

Good sherry palette in the aroma. Dryness, tannins, tea leaves, astringent marsh tones, prunes.
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is sweet, slightly sugary, repeating the profile described above, rolling and watery.
    • Finish
      87 87
Sweet dark dried fruits that stay with you for quite a while.

A great whisky, but unfortunately the sherry barrel is a bit too present for me.
    • Nose
      91 91
Old and sublime, you can clearly see the finish in sherry casks, although there is still some freshness of the bourbon barrel. Menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus, dust, books, red fruits (cherry, raspberry), chocolate, leather armchair, salt, sea breeze, lemon, apple.

With water it becomes nuttier and sweeter, but I like it better without it.
    • Taste
      89 89
Pretty tight for the only 46%. Tart with a lot of oak (spicy not bitter), more shaped by the sherry barrel, lots of dried fruits, plums, leather, pepper. From the second sip, lemon, salt and something mossy are added.
    • Finish
      90 90
Relatively long, spicy, with pepper, lemon and oak.

I was ashamed I didn't know this bottle even existed, but was given an opportunity to buy a 1oz sample of this and took advantage. This is excellent.

Yes, I cheated by looking at the cask type, but the sherried notes are very present along with the bourbon-y, oaky aromas. Quite fresh, with loads of fresh cut grass and eucalyptus scents. I have to say I am quite partial to Old Pulteney, having visited this Wick distillery back in the days, right after their 21yo won the "Whisky of the Year", and methinks this will be terrific.
    • Taste
      91 91
Excellent mouthfeel. Wow, I love this one. Bigger than the 46% ABV suggested. A bit winey, but this is an excellent sherried OP. This is definitely one of the better Pulteneys out there. It has a hint of some oak dryness, but it is delicious nonetheless. It's a cross between a modern and old school sherried whisky. Great balance. Great stuff.
    • Finish
      90 90
Moderate length. The bourbon-y notes are more present in the finish, with the cinnamon, oak, caramel, and cloves making a return.

I won't go into detail on the flavours as others have done it justice. I'd consider this a sherried whisky (I suppose it's partially sherried) on the brighter side of things. The nose is absolutely fantastic. It's got that liquor-infused sponge cake quality that I find in older sherried whiskies. The palate is very enjoyable, however I find it to be a bit muted, before transitioning to a finish that is a bit thin. But... there was something there, just not the bright fruit flavours that showed up at first. Was trying to figure out what was on the finish and then I saw Serge at Whiskyfun's review and he noted shortbread. That's exactly what I get on the finish - salty-sweet shortbread.

Overall highly enjoyable. I think all of my critiques would have gone away if this had been bottled at cask strength, and this may have gotten a 92 from me. In fact, to me it BEGS to have been bottled at cask strength. Definitely don't add water, in my opinion. I can only imagine how good this could have been! Nevertheless, highly enjoyable and a great whisky.

    • Nose
Magic nose. Orange confiture, warm biscuit soaked in berry liqueur, leather, carpentry, a little pine needles and mint.
    • Taste
The body is oily. On the palate, fruits, honey, salted caramel, pleasant tannin astringency, nuts.
    • Finish
      Long-lasting aftertaste, leather, tobacco, spices.

Grape and nut chocolate in liquid form. The aromas themselves are intense and quite well coordinated, only its basic structure is occasionally a bit out of round and inconsistent. The alcohol is not perfectly integrated, but age and maturity are on the positive side. The sulfur prevents a higher rating.
    • Nose
      90 90
Immediately the very rich and nutty oloroso is in the air, raisins and vanilla, dried fig and prunes, caramel and dark chocolate, hazelnuts and walnuts, dates and cherries, nougat and marzipan, cranberry, the fruit is accompanied by slightly oily and salty structures, leather armchairs , soft oak and velvety spices, apricot and candied orange, chewy forest honey, banana and apple, hints of malt and bread, dried mango strips
    • Taste
      89 89
oily, fruity with bitter accents, soft forest honey and oloroso, peppery oak with cinnamon and clove, some sandalwood, hazelnut and walnut, cocoa and some caramel, a touch of sulfur, vanilla and banana, barley malt, dried apricot and dark raisins, slightly salty - earthy, leather and tobacco, prune, marzipan, apple
    • Finish
      87 87
Caramel and nutty oloroso, leather with metallic notes and an oily-salty mouthfeel, hints of sulfur, subtle oak and barley malt, raisins and prunes, earthy cocoa and dark chocolate, ground cloves with a little cinnamon and pepper, cherry and cranberry, marzipan, tobacco, forest , Menthol

What an exciting, fantastic whisky this is! Every now and then you get the chance of buying a real stunner as part of a bottle share. Well, this whisky goes straight to the top of my 2020 list of whiskies I drunk.
    • Nose
An incredibly rich and perfectly matured whisky. This is shouting harmony from top to bottom. An excellent example of balance, finesse, depth and thrilling flavors all coming together after an intense maturation. I get leather, milk chocolate, Forrest fruit jam, red berry jelly, tropical fruits and antique wooden furniture. Once in a while I use the word ‘fantastic’ to describe the sensations a whisky gives me, this word is, without the shadow of a doubt, in place here!!
    • Taste
Oh wow. This is a real treat for the palate. Sweet, mature, savory, coastal. A very deeply layered whisky. Forrest fruit syrup, tropical fruits, cinnamon, chocolate powder, and wood polish. There is a lot going on here. The complexity is going through the roof. Very refined!
    • Finish
The long finish is responsible for a true afterparty. It covers the mouth completely and keeps presenting all kinds of sensations and flavors. Dried plumbs, ripe fruits, mocca, leather and antique wood. You don’t want to stop enjoying this. In one word sensational!

Probably one of the best whisky's drunk in 2020!
    • Nose

Soft and sweet, a little hidden, but after a little hand warmth it gives beautiful chocolate and leather, old colonial cupboards. Old wet wood notes are there too. Only to be found in very old whisky.
    • Taste
      92 92
Absolutely very good. Very matured wood, loads of chocolate, good aged cigars, pure chocolate. It has quite an oily mouthfeel!
    • Finish
      90 90
Long length. This could have been more outspoken. There is loads of old oak here, some woodpolish and quite some sweet raisins.
      Still very good thought!

This Old Pulteney is phenomenal! It’s elegant, velvety, perfectly balanced, vibrant, lively and not wood dominant or oaky. Nose utterly briljant, taste on par with nose and finish long and complex. What a stunner of a whisky, easily sits in my top 10-20 tasted whiskies.

This 34yo from 1983 delivers a whisky jam-packed with aromas and flavors. Dutch ‘gevuld speculaas’, an old cognac, milk chocolate, red berry gummies and something cointreau’ish, salted caramel syrup, but also overripe mango or tropical fruits, some mint and bits of lingering coastal aromas every now and then. Simply amazing!

  26. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

Elegant, thought out to the smallest detail whisky, which leaves behind a piece of happiness and rapture.
    • Nose
A sophisticated, complex aroma slowly reveals its palette of shades, consisting of a berry mix, mint, various dried fruits, rum women, varnished boards, an old book, a leather chair and cigar leaves. Wonderful!
    • Taste
The taste is dominated by the nuances of sweet cherry, red apple, dried apricots, walnuts and mint.
    • Finish
Extremely long, bright, enveloping. First comes the first powerful wave of berries and dried fruits. Then smoothly cover spices, nuts and dark chocolate. At the end, the storm gradually subsides, bringing with it delicate oak tones, a touch of menthol, a cigar smack and you are immersed in the abyss of pleasure ...

Cracking older whisky, good strength and good power.
    Nose is to die for.
    • Nose
      94 94
Delicate sherry, raisins and sultanas softly arriving but a bigger presence of stewed apples coming forward. Red berries and plenty of them, a fruit compote. Cranberry sauce, touches of cinnamon and ginger. Christmas has come.
Some sherry and brandy for good measure.
    • Taste
      92 92
Big powerful and just at the right strength. Salty impact on the palate, the maritime shining through. Oaky, more leather notes here from the sherry casks. Oak is turning slightly bitter with caramel.
In many ways tastes older than an 83 vintage.
    • Finish
      90 90
Oaky, long on oak and wood spice.

The best and most desirable bottle I tasted there.
    Unfortunately also the most expencive.
    • Nose
      90 90
Soft, rounded, yet rich and full.
A well ballanced nose with chocolate, leather, raisins and not too much wood.
Sets the expectations for the continuation very high, can it deliver?
    • Taste
      93 93
Full delivery of what's on the nose.
As ballanced as the nose, with a serious complexity of flavours, yet nothing sticking out too dominating.
The ABV is perfect, giving it a soft but yet quite firm feel.
"Yummi" fruit without getting too sweet.
      Old wood, without being tannic.
      Damn delicious stuff.
    • Finish
      92 92
The finish is just as ballanced as everything else, all the goodness just receding slowly.

the nose was full of salty sherry. sweet. what a promise. the first sip was keeping this promise. dark fruits, salty sea breeze, a fine oaky influence, some hints of white pepper, more dark fruits, some chocolate as well - but than it was gone all too quickley. the finish is too short for this age and all the good flavours faded away much too quickley. Fine dram but nothing special.

A classic "library treat malt". Here, the pleasant old dark fruit and barrel notes dominate, the typical "Pulteney-Maritimität" steps into the background. Since the 25-year-old is the "more typical Pulteney". But the 1983, at around the age of 34, is more mature, deeper, rounder, and a little less "oak plank" than many other thirty to forty-year-old boys.
    • Nose
The first nose brings oak, sherry, leather. A "Leather Armchair-in-the-Library Whisky". After a little warming of the malt rhubarb compote and anise notes, which were already noticeable at first tasting experiences.
    • Taste
Very fine, very round, plum roaster, oak, baked flavors - and this time, unlike the first tests, a nice strong tingling sets in. Then the Pulteney becomes spicier; Herbs, salt spray, sea beach.
    • Finish
The finish is beautifully warm and characterized by the heaviness of dark, sweet fruits and a fine oak aroma. The herbal and sea-beach aromas retreat, the sherry comes to the fore and again oak, leather. Such an old malt also stays nice and long in the mouth, throat and esophagus, the rejuvenation is a lasting pleasure.
