[May, 2018]  The legendary 1984 Caol Ila vintage in its best age after around 30 years of maturation - so I have high expectations...

The colour is yellow gold and the texture shows small sticky tears that slowly consolidate and build very slow legs.  The nose offers this adorable mix of maritime peaty, tobacco ashy, medicinal and fruity-sweet aromas these Caol Ila vintages of the early eighties are famous for.  I really like to sniff and explore this dram in detail.  It arrives warming in the mouth and instantly coats the whole of it with a slight drying feeling (cold ashes).  The taste is complex and sweeter than the nose with less medicinal and more fruity notes.  Still very balanced and very quaffable.  The finish is long and nicely chewable, it vanishes slowly in different waves without distracting moments (except this slight ashy feeling again).  Some water turns the dram more approachable (smoother) and releases more aromas both in the nose and on the palate but unfortunately it adds some rather bitter notes too (what often happens with sherried whiskies).  I like to nose it reduced with a little water added but prefer to drink it neat (using two glasses).

Another great 1984 Caol Ila but to be honest - I had several better drams of this vintage before that were even better (mostly bourbon only maturations).  This one is a little too drying/ashy (according to my taste buds) but still it is a great whisky, for sure.  Is it worth 500+ Eurobucks?  Certainly not (judging as a drinker)...

Caol Ila 33 Years, 1984/2017, Gordon & MacPhail M, La Maison du Whisky Exclusive, Refill Sherry Cask 6103, 52.7%, 165 fl.
    Color: amber
Nose: Beautiful, fruity notes of apricot and some ginger. Spices such as cinnamon and cloves complete the whole, wrapped in a beautiful smoke coat. With water even more fruity with raspberries. Less salt, more sweetness.
Palate: The typical, medicinal note binds fruit and smoke into a very complex construct. There's a lot to discover. From leather and cigar tobacco over sea salt flakes to apricots in caramel. With water round and tasty. Less medical.
Finish: Very long finish with plenty of coffee beans, tobacco and salt. At the end, the apricot and cinnamon come through again. With water more subtle, fruity and sweeter.
Conclusion: 90/100 points - "Awsome Sherry-Caol Ila". La Maison du Whisky has made a really great grip on the anniversary. This Caol Ila offers amazingly fruity aromas, paired with complex notes and lots of distillery character. Who likes Caol Ila should try here at least once. The price of 565 € is ambitious and frightens, that's understandable. But you also get an old, very limited and very exquisite whisky for it. Give him a lot of time and a few drops of water.
Would I buy more? No, due to the price, I would not buy a whole bottle, but I would share a bottle with someone. For around 400 € I would certainly buy a bottle.
