The sample (5cl) was a bit too small, but I still want to describe it. Because he's very special. As a friend of bourbon ripening and Ben Nevis admirer, this sample was a must. It's unicorn quality. I've secured a bottle of that.
    Exactly my style.
    • Nose
He starts with grassy herb notes. Light fruits mixed with fresh vegetables under damp hay. A delicate vanilla with blossom honey. I'll try to summarize: “In an old woodshed with an earthy floor, there is a box of freshly picked different apples on a damp bale of straw, lined with several tufts of grass. Very special nose. Spirit and barrel in harmony. Masterly.
    • Taste
With water a creamy and rich texture. Underlaid with light pepper and an extremely mouthwashing citrus fruit effect in a class of its own. A fabulous culinary experience. However, the complexity has its limits. Now the whole thing is also malty with sweet, salty spices. It makes an impression how well a Ben Nevis reacts in a bourbon barrel. A masterpiece. Now in the background comes the grapefruit with rich and pleasant oak notes. This grapefruit feeling brings back memories of the Teeling24 and dominates the transition.
    • Finish
Medium finish and thanks to the delicately bitter grape effect, it dries quickly and is not disruptive. All in all, it remains a special malt experience in the mouth and immediately demands more. Refilling is the order of the day. The quality of this bottling deserves an award. These are the good moments of reward with all the many other rehearsals that are so often just exhausting.
Thanks to the whisky world. Thanks to Ben Nevis.

Ben Nevis 20YO without water: A ripe apple topped with a strong vanilla sauce and old wood. Over time in the glass, the apple turns into a beautiful ripe peach, overall it becomes earthier, leathery and dusty. Forest floor, wax polish and old books. With water, the fruit, pale grapes and pears become waxy in the mouth, especially creamy vanilla and apples in the mouth. Dusty old books and becoming leatherier over time. In the finish again vanilla cream with ripe apple, followed by clear oak. Very nice whisky!

Finally, a single cask bottling of Ben Nevis from an ex-Bourbon barrel! Nothing against ex-sherry casks - but what a distillery can do is more clearly expressed in ex-bourbon barrels. The boisterous, edgy and varied Destilleriecharakter of Ben Nevis may not be for everyone. If you can basically do something with it, you will love this whisky very much! In any case, it is a sophisticated whisky, which requires a lot of time and attention - and this deserves!
    • Nose

Ben Nevis in its purest form: box of chocolates, light fruits (pineapple, mango and peach), apple compote with vanilla, cinnamon and a dollop of cream, harbor basin (seaweed, moist dew, oil), slightly smoked ham, mountain cheese, pipe armchair and old wooden hut.
    • Taste
      94 94
Crème brûlée, baked apple and again the Ben-Nevis-typical box of chocolates (with slightly darker chocolate than in the nose), cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, hot gum and a strong, well-salted vegetable soup with meat inlay.
    • Finish
      95 95
While the fruity, chocolaty, fleshy and maritime aromas slowly fade away, earthy, leathery, spicy and woody flavors stand out all the more. The distant plume of smoke also blows over very gently.

  4. Thermidor scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A good whisky, all told, but I don't agree with the very high average score.

Tasted with Ben Nevis 21yo HL14287 (83 pts.) and Glen Garioch 25yo cask 2752 (90).
    • Nose
Woodier and nuttier than reference whisky Ben Nevis 21yo HL 14287. Faint smoke. Doesn't feel like a first fill whisky, but the bourbon is definitely there, bringing sweetness and butteriness with it. Dried fruit and dried malts. An oddly sweet distillate too, sugary even.
    • Taste
The body is good neat. Rich and present. This wonderful bourbonwood works well with the distillate. Just the kind of oak I like, though it could maybe stand to be more vivid. Nicely detailed and well matured, though. With water: Rounder now, and more sugary.
    • Finish
A nice combination of restrained caskwood and the dried fruit from the distillate.

A Ben Nevis to my taste. A great treat, especially with a few drops of water. I cannot discover real bad notes, some of which are mentioned here. Simply a fruity, round pleasure that you don't often find in this quality, especially since strong Ben Nevis made from bourbon barrels are a rare commodity anyway.

I was a little scared that Ben Nevis shining would only work in sherry, but luckily in bourbon too. 90/91.
    • Nose
      90 90
Big fruits, especially green apple. Vanilla, cinnamon, spicy oak and lacquered wood.
    • Taste
      91 91
Powerful and fruity. Banana and grape. Cocoa and mojito, vanilla and nice bourbon notes.
    • Finish
      90 90
      Long, spicy, oaky.
