- Fits, wobbles and has air. So delicious as usual, you know a few years (see my notes on 1996, 2002, 2003, 2006).
- It's the nose of the Talisker 10 years old, with more smoke first. Also a softer shade, woody. Then the sherry goes up, creamy, red fruits, elastic, leather, caramel. It's heady, deep, wet. Cherry, blackcurrant, blackberries. It takes a good ten minutes before the peat is felt.
On the palate, it is unctuous, olive oil, vanilla, red plum, caramelized waffle, sponge cake. The pepper is light, the finish is very successful, long, with cola, a little soot, tobacco, liquorice, melted chocolate. An ounce of tannins in retro-olfaction, it reminds of port.

The fruits are surprisingly more present than the peat, just because it is quickly felt but remains in the background. We are on a delicate mix of grapes and red fruits. A light smoke and … I do not know what makes me think of a walk in the woods (sometimes we have images like that difficult to describe more precisely, but if it can reassure you it does not smell the squirrel’s dung :p).
The peat takes its place (after all, it is a Talisker!), Accompanied by woody and peppery touches. The fruits take a stewed form, really sweet. It is pleasantly delicate, sweet and… sweet. This is the first time that a Talisker has this effect to me, it could reconcile the most recalcitrant peaple with peat.
Medium length, peat and fruits in a nice balance. Amazing, and surprising, really.
- I enjoyed this one very much. I have to say the 10 and this Distillers Edition are not worlds apart, but both enjoyable and different on their own. The thing is, as with all Taliskers I've had, the bottle could use a little oxygen first. The 10, Port Ruighe and this Distillers Edition were a bit too spicy and brash at the start of the bottle. After drinking 1/3rd of the bottle it became more enjoyable. Nevertheless, it's a bottle I probably would buy again! I could see myself grabbing the standard 10 over the Distillers Edition one night and vice versa. It all depends on mood, but I'm inclined to empty this one a little quicker.. :)
Nice balance between sweet and malty, the sherry is there but doesn't dominate. Subtle peat, brine, ash, salt, pepper, sea air. The usual coastal notes to begin with, but much less in your face as with the standard 10 year old. The slightly acidic sweetness consists of bitter orange, raisin, cranberry, dried apricot, strawberry and pineapple for the fruity side. Then we have lots of dark chocolate, sweet malt, custard, walnuts, coffee beans, coconut milk, brown sugar, honey and vanilla. Roast beef, chicken satay and bbq sauce give it a subtle meaty twist to round things off. Just like the real world, it's give and take. We've got an added sweetness but gave away a part of the punch. Practically zero burn on the nose, which is pleasant.
On the palate it becomes clear that this whisky is only finished in sherry casks, as it shows more aggressiveness. The nose was friendly but it takes you by surprise with your first sip! Salt and pepper, brine, vanilla, ash, peat, iodine and smoked bacon are the main culprits. There's an integrated sweetness but most of it lies behind the curtain of coastal flavours. Again fruits like pineapple, sour apple, rum soaked raisin and orange peel. Caramel, creme brulee, walnut, peanut, sweet bbq sauce and mushroom finally. The sherry finish doesn't show as much as with the nose.
Medium, mostly coastal notes and caramel sauce with a bittersweet edge. At the end stage it reminds me of a Belgian quad beer (Rochefort 10, try it it's delicious!)
