  1. Lakerfield scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

A rather clean Nevis keeping the fact in mind that it came from a sherry butt. That means no sulphur, yay! It keeps that earthy character nevertheless. The whisky itself was good and above average, but not a stand out amongst the heaps of middle aged Ben Nevis. Older is not always better and this is one of those moments. I would still buy a bottle at a good price.

    Based on a sample.
    • Nose
Textbook Ben Nevis with tropical fruits and that earthy dirty character. No distracting sulphuric aroma's. Yet. There's apricot, tangerine, passion fruit, caramelised fig, orange marmalade, Mars bar, banana candy, sweet licorice, cherry cola, manuka honey, sour cream, walnut, dry gravel, a bit of furniture polish and something like sheep wool. I'd probably identify this as a great ex-bourbon Nevis. What counts is that it's great!
    • Taste
Spicy in its arrival and thin for a Nevis. No sulphur again, so that's okay. We have dried apricot, orange zest, raspberry, rose water, strawberry, cherry cola, milk chocolate praliné, apple pie, honey, new oak, balsamic vinegar, leather and some salinity in the back. Spicy at first sip which takes some minutes to adapt to. Further on just a good Nevis, with subtle sherry notes. It blends the best of ex-bourbon and sherry together.
    • Finish
Between short and medium in length and mostly malty here. Again dried apricot, raspberry, orange zest, strawberry yoghurt, brown sugar, cherry cola, honey, creamy malt and walnut.

This is how I like my sherry-matured malts. Superb!

Typical Ben Nevis nose. A bit understating with that characteristic weird smell that I can't put into words (Edit: Cask1988 described it very fittingly as a "raw, earthy, muddy layer combined with water that ran through peat grounds"). The sherry influence is subtle but definitely noticeable. I get floral notes, cooked veggie stew and some berries. The alcohol is present with a fresh menthol note. Smells like it has been forgotten in a basement for a while but it's still alive and kicking!
    • Taste

Sweet with prominent sherry notes. Raisins, strawberries, honey with some herbs, menthol, spices like cinnamon and cloves. The mouthfeel is oily with some taste of sweet grapefruit and cherries. Beautiful! Great combination of sweet sherry notes/fruits and fresh menthol.

Sweetness and sherry notes linger. Definitely still tasting strawberries and the memory of menthol lingers at the back of my throat. Finally the wood comes through with some dry notes.

This a quality dram! It has quite some depth, and sherry influence is perfectty balanced with the fresh grapefruits and the 'dirty' Ben Nevis destillate. The only downside is that the bottle emptied quickly...

Very deep and layered! Grapefruit and liquorice dominate, but there so much more to it. It's sherried, with chocolate, raisins and dates. It's Ben Nevis, with a metallic and mineral edge and a trace of smoke. It's musty and old, but has fresher younger edge as well ( juniper, yogurt, cut flowers). It's a bit spicy (cardamom, lemon grass), I get walnuts and marzipan. I could sniff this for hours!
    • Taste
      91 91
An oily thickness coats the moath and reveals the sour freshness of grapefruit, cherries and redcurrants. It's followed by dark chocolate, liquorice, vanilla, and an interesting note of salted and roasted peanuts. Then some coffee, before the dirty side kicks in: a bit of leather, metallic notes, rubber and a leafy and earthy kind of smoke. Amazing development!
    • Finish
      88 88
It's long; grapefruits and dark chocolate again. Earl grey (including tannins) and dry spices. A bit more salty and smoky now.

  7. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Ben Nevis is one of those very recognizable distilleries because of an very outspoken character. It’s such a shame that a lot of this malt goes to Japan to be blended into Japanese whiskies. They have so much to offer. It’s a rather raw type of whisky. Something to pour in after a few other drams. Not for starters. This Nevis was brought in by one of my whiskymates for a small but quality tasting session and boy did we enjoy this one! It was a bottlekill, and the best way to do that is doing that in good company.
    • Nose
On the nose this immediately is a recognizable Ben Nevis! That nice raw, earthy, muddy layer combined with water that ran through peat grounds. It has got a nice musty layer as well, clearly an older bottling. The nose gives a sweet&sour sensation. Tropical influences are here. To me it gives grapefruit, pomelo, canned tropical fruitpunch and mild spices. There is also a fresh and almost grassy note to it as well. Something like lemon grass and pine trees I’d say. The muddy side disappears to the background now. The nose keeps getting better and better. After 26 years inside the cask it’s not quite redundant to give it some time to breath. This is not an clear sherry butt maturation from the start. It’s only after time and hand warmth that this reveals. Subtle red fruits, raisins, dried dates and walnuts give stage to the sherry side of this maturation. Also the muddy side gains strength again after warming it up a little. The development on the nose is nothing short of sensational! Very, very complex stuff!
    • Taste
Growing, growing, growing, still growing..Wow..This is what I mean with a flavor explosion in slow motion! My god this is terrific! On the taste the sherry butt maturation is present from the start but man..what a build-up! Soft and ripe red fruits and tropical fruits. Again grapefruit but also cherries, raisins and redberry jelly. After a while some pepper gives a bite to the taste which dissolves into a full on warm and creamy mouth full of joy. This is so well matured, balanced, delicate and harmonious. It’s intense and gentle at the same time. Really impressive. I do not overly use this word but this is Fantastic!
    • Finish
The finish seems to be endless. Soft, sweet, round, creamy and full of flavor. There is delicate sherried oak, soft Arabic spices, caramel fudge, mocca and cocoa. If you still have an open or closed bottle of this you can call yourself lucky. I’m delighted to be able to have tasted two royal drams of this fantastic single malt!

A whisky rarely surpassed in complexity and balance.
    • Nose

Strong nose. Multi-layered fragrance that covers the 56.5 Vol% sustainably.
Aroma is reminiscent of dry Lake Constance algae and a sidewalk, just before a summer rain.
Red wine notes come through, peppermint reminiscent of speculoos.
On top of the glass Brunello or another heavy Italian red. Gooseberry at the bottom of the glass exit.
    • Taste
      91 91
Sweet. Mon Cheri. Oily, creamy mouthfeel. Not spicy, edible without water.
    • Finish
      92 92
Surprising on the finish, because it opens again for new flavors and no oak spicy developed. Long, warm, not dry, still creamy.

Ben Nevis can have two distinct faces. This one combines the two in one dram.
    • Nose
Dirty toffee, peach, butter candy, hazelnut, papaya, grass and apple. Later chocolate paste.
    • Taste
Peach, butter candy, blood orange, peanut, almond and walnut.
    • Finish
Walnut, peach, caramel and blood orange.
