Delicious Highland Park, no doubt! Sweet, delicious, even without water to drink well and even better with a few drops! But something in the quality class, there are already half of the money!
    • Nose
      87 87
Mirabelle compote, creme brulee, vanilla pudding, pear juice, heather, very soft smoke, a little mint, lemon sorbet, with some lychee. Beautiful bourbon barrel nose. With a little water, the vanilla is even stronger and it comes to a delicate lilac
    • Taste
      88 88
Creamy, lots of vanilla pudding, very well integrated alcohol, ginger, orange peel, allspice, salt water, licorice, honey, pears, almonds and subtly the smoke again.
    • Finish
      89 89
Spicy and creamy with ginger and vanilla, with delicate citrus notes and roasted almonds. Beautifully harmonious and quite long!

Beautiful highland park. the ginger spiciness makes it something special in my opinion
    • Nose
      88 88
Citrus fruits, maritime smoke, briefly there are notes of burnt match heads, vanilla, heather, a few floral notes and a little mint, the alcohol is slightly present.
    • Taste
      88 88
creamy start, light fruits, pears, vanilla, slight ginger spiciness, citrus fruits, herbs
    • Finish
      87 87
Spicy creamy and spicy at the beginning with ginger. Then citrus fruits and almonds appear. He stays for a long time.

Finally, my hands reached out to the publication of a sample of Highland Park that has already been tested for a long time... And since the main sales hype of this release has already passed, the material can no longer be called advertising ???? Well, as they say - let there be light? ????

    ???? Color: white muscat wine

???? Aroma: heather, wax, minerality, carpentry, orange marmalade... a little creamy vanilla toffee... further, a little milk chocolate appears in development... echoes of carpenter's varnish again...

???? Taste: oily, rich, juicy... ginger... vanilla... white pepper... orange peels just taken from the fruit... bitterness of oak barrels... minimalist inclusions of leather goods...

???? Finish: Long and warm... pepper and ginger... vanilla... Toffee caramel, a bit of oak astringency...

???? Conclusion: a wonderful and honest bourbon release... without a drop of sherry, but how pleasant and varied in aroma and taste... this is not a shame to put on the shelf and drink with friends on a significant occasion...

PS For haters, a photo of unopened bottles, but it was tested from a sample ... It's a pity to open mine yet ...)))

    ???? Points: 89

... detached from the price, the marketing and all the hype, this is a very good 17-year-old.
... if I take the price into account, I get 2 bottles of the "Full Volume 1999/2017" for this money - and it is at least equivalent, probably even slightly better.

      immediately alcoholic, then sweet (honey), subtly fruity (lemons, pears), hint of vanilla;
    • Taste
      87 87
      it can be drunk undiluted, but releases a lot more aromas with a few drops of water. Creamy, sweet, vanilla, caramel, yellow fruits, wild herbs, heather, minimal smoke, woody, spicy (pepper), quite complex;
    • Finish
      87 87
good medium-long, creamy (vanilla) finish with a spicy, peppery finish.

Fresh pears, sweet citrus notes and burnt heather with nice oak spices
Full-bodied caramel notes, sweet vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and freshly cut wood. Sweet pear with hints of peat smoke.
Sweet, long and with a light citrus note.

I found this more enjoyable than The Dark. No pun intended, it is just so much brighter. In terms of how these compare, they are very appropriately named. The finish was about the same as dry-hopped ciders I’ve had and combined with that peat quality felt almost like that’s what I was drinking. Also too expensive for what it offers, but still a nice dram.
    • Nose

      Very bright pear, lime. Floral/rose.
    • Taste
      80 80
Salt/spice really build and drown out some light citrus and floral notes.
    • Finish
      80 80
      Vanilla/woody smoke, appley malt/dry-hopped cider.

I didn't like it that much with water, it just takes time. 'The Dark' was more successful.

the white oak wood of the bourbon barrels comes into its own here, caramel and vanilla show up, along with roasted aromas, yeast and a little sponge cake, heather and honey, pear and apple, banana, hints of pineapple and orange, and after a while a little brine and creamed horseradish as well as cinnamon
    • Taste
      83 83
sweet honey and dry oak, vanilla and caramel, ash and maritime notes, spice palette: nutmeg and clove, pepper, mild ginger, the barrel looks used up and has a little too much bitterness, walnut, apple and apricot, heather, malt
    • Finish
      84 84

Highland Park created The Light, which, according to the plan, was supposed to symbolize summer - the authors succeeded, it turned out an excellent, truly summer malt, light and light.
    • Nose
      87 87
Wonderful, deep; cream soda, vanilla ice cream, sweet pastry alternating with fruity tones of pears, apricots and peaches; strong herbal note, heather, freshly cut grass, meadow flowers; a little spice, a little haze.
    • Taste
      88 88
Light fruits in the foreground, pears, apricot jam; lemon cheesecake; honey-ginger tones appear; a little pepper, a little spices; here is vanilla, mint and, of course, herbs; woody notes break through; everything is very harmonious.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium length, continuing flavor; dominated by vanilla and oak spice; smoke from smoking pears; fruits leave, giving way to herbal and mint tones; ginger is felt well.

  20. Totoro scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Ultra clean, bright and straight. I usually prefer sherry-matured HPs, but this is not half bad. Pity it's too expensive.
Classic example of a good bottling that suffocates under the weight of its hyped-up presentation and inflated pricing.
    • Nose
      87 87
Hayfields in the summer heat, salted butter, freshly baked croissants, ripe apricots, garden herbs, and a soft maritime / briny side with very well integrated, heathery peat smoke. A pretty, and yes: summery assemblage.
    • Taste
      89 89
Very full and rich, mouth-wateringly juicy and with perfect balance between sweet and sour. There is even a lovely late burst of orchard fruits, just when you think that the oak is about to take over. Pear crumble? A bit of spice at the end from the wood.
Doesn't need water, no burn, the strength works perfectly well.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium at best, but absolutely inoffensive, with a lot of lingering sweetness.

    - There is NO light in the DARK!
    - yes it remains a very good single malt, BUT as a
Counterpart to THE DARK and the called one
    Price a very disappointing HP
    - in contrast to "THE DARK" (which was extremely good and
also showed high quality according to the price) is
the "THE LIGHT" unfortunately no enlightenment, but works
fully under (... in the high expectation
    this malt)
    - for a price around 180 € is my expectation
a different one than, for example, a Balvenie
12 yrs. Single Cask (Bourbon) with approx. 50 € or the HP Full Volume 1999/2017, (by the way also 17 or even 18 yrs and for half the price even BETTER in taste!)
    - but unfortunately the extra price was not noticeable here, other Bourbon bottlings with higher percentages were also able to convince at least as well or better for half the price in a direct comparison

    Conclusion:
    - beautiful wood carving
    - nice bottle
    - good bourbon storage
    - The price is exaggerated many times over => DISASTER!
    • Nose
strong bourbon nose, sweetness, oak, vanilla, but the alcohol is clearly noticeable
    • Taste
      oW: strong, spicy start, still burns slightly on the lips;

mW: a bit more pleasant, but still strong oak, a lot of spice, little sweetness, hardly any vanilla, tastes like a sapped barrel, hardly any concise pleasant bourbon aromas
    • Finish
      medium-long, spicy, intense finish;
      medium-long spicy, strong alcoholic aftertaste

  25. LeChiffre scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A successful bourbon barrel maturation. Nice sweet and fruity notes with a peppery spice and ginger spice as a counterpoint. The smoke is only slightly noticeable, but adds an interesting component. However, the price is clearly too high, such quality can already be found at Malts for around 80-100 euros.

Highland Park and Bourbon Casks are totally underestimated, this one also proves how good the whiskys can be, even if they are overloaded with marketing stories
    • Nose
Great! Fresh lemon, mint, a sweet and spicy floral, possibly fir honey and salted butter. The basic maritime character and some iodine are borne here by the strong alcohol content, later wort comes with yeast notes
    • Taste
does not need water, the 52.9% vol. are perfectly coordinated. More smoke, more heather fire, more citrus. Grapefruit and eucalyptus oil, with a pleasantly earthy touch
    • Finish
spicy and earthy, cinnamon and coniferous forest floor

  33. Lu Cifer scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    Aroma:
A little restrained at first, takes a little time in the glass. After a while, slightly aromatic and fruity with a light smoky note and oak tones.

    * with a little water:
more open and aromatic, yellow fruits, hint of exotic with fruit candy, vanilla, hint of smoke and oak.

    Taste:
sweetish, fruity, somewhat perfumed, light spice, oak notes and spices.
While sipping the fire rekindles, some coffee, delicious!

    Departure:
Tart-sweetish, soft, now also a hint of smoke, becoming dry, at the end slightly fruity and sweet, lingering for a relatively long time.

Conclusion: takes time and a few drops of water, sipping is good for him, can be described as complex. No fabric softener, has strength and character ...

This is a beautifully concentrated, almost creamy goodness. Relatively sweet - somehow just below the load limit for me.

In the aroma I have citrus peel, some herb, dried banana, vanilla butter cream and lemon wafers. The strength of alcohol is hardly known at all, ie it is beautifully drunk undiluted. The peat flashes on the tongue all the time - as if you were sticking pins into your tongue. I would probably define the taste as simply as a banana wrapped in honey and ash and lightly sprinkled with pepper. Yeah, and the finish is really long and after a long time very pleasantly bitter: something like a grapefruit peel.

A few drops of water soften the experience, but at the same time, paradoxically, it intensifies the hotness that goes from pepper to chilli, especially in the second half of the body and in the finish when my tongue almost burns.

    (Based on sample.)

    Light

A little over a year ago I tried the Highland Park 17 Year Old The Dark, which had matured on sherry casks and was supposed to represent autumn. I felt it tasted great, but was too expensive. More than 200 EUR for a 17 years old malt is just not right, I think. The counterpart – The Light, to represent the summer – is also 17 years old and bottled at the same 52.9% (so not cask strength) and 28.000 bottles strong. It matured on refill American oak. The price is the same. I hope the quality is as well.

The nose is soft and sweet on vanilla and roasted pineapple. Lots of heather, soft smoke and a bouquet of wild flowers. Reine Claude plums and pear juice, lemon and lime sherbet. Honey and mint. Pebbles on the beach. A summery shower. I daresay this is complex.

Great creamy mouthfeel. Vanilla custard and lemon juice go hand in hand with pepper, liquorice and candied ginger. Evolves from fruity and sweet towards brackish and it works like a magical spell. Walnuts and almonds, honey and pears and lots of spices from the oak. Yes, this is complex. In fact, this is magnificent!

The finish is medium long, nicely piquant and smoky with delicate citrus and lots of vanilla.

Damn. Fair is fair. This is an outstanding Highland Park!

I am a fan of good bourbon maturations. That's why this bottle fits me fully. Well done ! Certainly the called price> 200 EUR is completely wrong. Sorry HP, but the PLV doesn't work at all. Just ... and I'll say it very carefully:
"Anyone who rates this whisky badly has not understood it" (Refill American Oak)
    • Nose
Just like I like the bourbon stories. It comes fresh and lemon-flowery. A fine vanilla underlines the delicate oak and the subtle smoke. With a little water it's awesome!
    • Taste
He starts softly but dominantly. Apple-pear-Helene with caramelized nuts hidden in a haze of smoke. He takes his time in the mouth. Small sips are an advantage. The wood is delicately spicy and revitalizes the tongue accordingly. Wow. Well done. Respect!
    • Finish
Clearly long and wonderfully oily, it slowly lets go, sweetly sour and slightly bitter. This is a tailor-made finish. There is nothing to complain about here except the price. This is not a premium class. It's delicious, ... but doesn't make it to our bar.

Very good whisky, light and complex enough. It was released as a summer expression (in opposing to The Dark) and HP succeeded with that very well - fruity and flowery character is easily recognizable. However, the price is set very high (around 200 euros while 28k bottles released - a bit strange price, right?) making this bottling rather collector's item than a daily dram.

Beautiful exBourbon nose with sweet bright fruits. There are pears, bright grapes, apricots and maybe some pineapple. This is accompanied by a nice hint of vanilla and light peat with lots of herbs and a hint of smoke. Overall, the nose is very compact and full. The alcohol is very nicely involved. A few drops of water soothe the malt and make it more elegant, floral.
    • Taste
Strong start with neat spice, herbs and pear peel, which brings some bitterness with it. Tingling on the tongue and becoming increasingly sweeter. You can taste the wood, minimal smoke, marzipan and a few citrus flavors. Water makes the Highland Park a bit creamier but somehow intensifies it. He gains fruit. Exciting!
    • Finish
Medium length with citrus notes, again slightly bitter pear skin, honey and butter.

If I would be looking for a typical HP I would point to this one - in particular on the palate the mix of fine smoke, leather and saltiness is exactly that - great!
    • Nose
Fresh, citrus fruits, lemons, mirabelles, little nutty, fine oak wood, seabreeze, whiffs of smoke - really good
    • Taste
Punchy, oily, liquorice, good wood, salty, hints of smoke and leather, some fruitiness, subtle sweetness
    • Finish
      Long and warm

After Highland Park The Dark this is the second release in the series. This time aged for 17 years exclusively in American oak barrels, the light, tropical fruit notes are dominating here, followed by a creamy vanilla sweetness and a spicy and slightly peppery core. Clearly a very delicate summer whisky with a spicy twist. In direct comparison, however, I prefer The Dark as I simply like the "dark flavours" associated with the European oak more.

I thank Highland Park for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Yellow fruits on the nose, such as green apples, apricots, ripe pears with a hint of litschi and a little peach. Notes of vanilla and lemon sorbet emerge, nicely mixed with a touch of oak and a whiff of smoke in the back.
    • Taste
Sweet, fruity, rich and bold on the palate. There's a delicate fruitiness with oranges, lemons, mango and peach interwoven with a warming mix of white pepper, ginger and oak spice. Once the warmth fades, creamy vanilla, honey and yellow fruit jam linger with a touch of smoke towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is long, warm and creamy with peach and apple. Becomes drier on the tail with spiced oak, a little nuttiness and a touch of heathery smoke.

With water: A few drops of water significantly tame the delicate tropical fruitiness while notes of vanilla and honey emerge. On the palate, this dram is still bold and intense with a decreased fruitiness. There's also less sweetness while prickling oak, ginger spice and white pepper dominate. The finish is medium to long, warm and creamy with vanilla and honey.

NNase ok ... in the taste too bitter ... again a lot of hustle and bustle for nothing. Pity
    • Nose
Apple followed by alcohol. A light caramel sweetness comes in front of something in the biscuit direction. Possibly. roasted flavors
    • Taste
Strong 52.9% sweet ... prickly tongue ... some tanine ... lighter smoke 5-10ppm
    • Finish
Dry ... medium ... still tanine

Nose: mature aromas, voluminous vanilla, citrus notes, smoke, oak and a hint of flowers.
Palate: soft, powerful body with sweet pears, caramel, vanilla, wood notes and nuts, framed in a filigree veil of smoke.
    Finish: long, creamy, smoky finish.
