Cooley has been founded in 1987 by John Teeling. His intention has been to bring Irish whiskey back to a top position in the world. Cooley was the first new Irish distillery in over 100 years. One of John Teeling's first steps after founding the new distillery was to buy the old, well known brand of Tyrconnell. Then he bought the distillery Kilbeggan and used the warehouses there because the ones at Cooley were too small.
The distillery has pretty small pot stills and also continuous stills, so that both single malt whiskey and grain whiskey can be produced. Cooley produces a wide range of different brands.
Their malt whiskey is double distilled, which is unusual for Ireland because most Irish whiskeys are triple distilled.
The distillery has been sold to Jim Beam in 2011. Jim Beam itself was bought by Suntory in 2014.
