About Syleo:

Some thoughts on my whisky scores: Even more than tasting notes and descriptions, scoring is a very individual issue, largely depending on personal experience, personal taste and an individual scoring system. In order to put my scoring, which is mainly done for my own orientation, into some kind of context, here is a short description of my scoring categorization:

00-09 - Spit it out, gagging, not drinkable

10-19 – You may succeed in overcoming the urge of getting rid of it

20-29 – Unpleasant in the mouth, but can be tasted

30-39 – Terrible, distinct flavors are discernable, but nothing is pleasant

40-49 – Spooky, some appealing flavors are there but overall not recognizable as whisky

50-59 – Already whisky but still daunting, far too many flaws

60-64 – Well enough drinkable, but there are still some disconcerting flaws

65-69 - Okay, it does not bother you, but you do not have to have it again - irrelevant

70-74 - Good, you may well order it in the hotel bar, but you’d rather not buy it

75-79 – Enjoyable, as a simple whisky for easy drinking, also for home purchase

80-84 – Delicious and very good, tasting material or recommendation

85-89 – Great, really something for connoisseurs

90-95 – Superb, worth at least an hour of intense enjoyment

96-98 –The top 2 achievable percent - the best I've tasted so far

99-100 - The Holy Grail, of course probably impossible to reach

I was born back in 1973 in Bonn and still live in the Rhinelandic vicinity of the cozy former capital. I came to like whisky in the 90s studying English and Scottish history in Edinburgh during a study abroad year, and over time the love of whisky has constantly been intensifying. Basically, I'm more of a fan of non-peated ex-bourbon style whiskies, but from time to time other styles of smokier, ex-sherry, ex-port, or ex-wine casks might be able to impress and enthuse me, depending on chance and mood.

At the moment I especially favour the single malts from Bacardi’s distilleries (from Aultmore & Craigellachie to Deveron / Macduff & Royal Brackla). I've been a member in various Facebook whisky groups, here in the base and in some forums for a while now, and have come to appreciate the exchange of experience, samples and bottle divisions for extending my horizon even further.
