What are your whisky plans for 2018?

For me it's to finish my whisky room, two thirds of the way there. Seek out more hidden gems. Islay festival in May. Visit a few more distilleries. Keep up the variety on the whisky front. Might even make the WB gathering this year.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. Tom Waits

Visit the whiskyfestival in Ghent, Belgium, in March. To buy less bottles, but better ones - I think I've covered the basics fairly well by now, time to 'up the ante'. Visit a few distilleries (probably in Belgium or the Netherlands - not much of a chance of visiting Schotland with 2 young children). Learn more about whisky and distilling and become a complete whisky nerd, organise a few more tastings for friends & family and yes, hopefully get to go to the Gathering in autumn.

Definit: mid May, 4 nights in Speyside and catch Blair Athol and Edradour on the 5th day on the way back down to Edinbourgh.

Desired: visit Mackmyra on the Swedish east coast. Need a weekend, it's a 7 hour drive each way.

Hopefully: manage my calendar so I can visit Oslo whisky festival, usually in November.

Maybe: put in some volunteer work here at WB.

Besides that... man up and get to the bottom of some of my open bottles!

Purchasing a lot less this year by keeping it to no more than 35 bottle purchases (about what we consume per year).

Only 5 or maybe 6 Big ones this year and in order to afford them i will send some of my Sherry monsters to auction. Helped me a lot in the past beacuse sherried whiskies sell really well.

For medium priced ones i will limit my purchases to early 90s vintage Glen Garioch indie bottles and stock up some more of them, since they won't be around forever and their prices are slowly creeping up at the moment.

For everything else there are samples.

My budget is a little smaller this year because i've become a fan of English suits and ties. Will buy two new ones this year and it will cut into my Whisky budget but it's worth it.

I considered a kilt when I visited Kirkwall.......

They had some genuine locally made hanging on a rack at the back of a store.

Think they had to be tailor fitted, because none of them were finished, only stitched up at the lenght. No price tags neither, and I figured there were no real need to ask since just a decent sporran was £300.

But goddamn those things are heavy, must be 10-12kg.

So I settled for a dark checkered Shetland-whooly sixpence happy

Hopefully moderate my impulse to buy more and more.

But then again, I need to find more of the older Laddie bottling...

sigh
