Hi,

with many whisky festivals and tastings having fallen victim to Covid-19 in 2021, I thought we could start a whisky event with proper social distancing and tasting some nice drams.

This is how it works:

• I will provide the train (a package suitable for sending whisky samples), 6 carriages (2 cl sample bottles) and the first 6 passengers (whisky samples from my open bottle rotation)
• the train will be divided into 1st class and 2nd class: in 1st class, there will be 2 samples which I deem worthy of 90 points or higher, while in 2nd class there will be 4 samples scoring in the mid- or high 80s
• sample bottles will be marked with Whiskybase IDs instead of whisky names to open the possibility for a blind tasting (optional)
• anyone interested with a Norwegian shipping address can join this event till end of August by posting a reply below, participants will be sorted in the order they signed up to determine the route of the train
• the first recipient of the train can open and taste any number of samples from the package, and then replace these samples with whiskies from his/her own open bottle collection
• (optional) rate and review the samples you have tasted
• any samples which are not of interest to the recipient can be left in the train
new passengers (samples) should follow some simple rules: 1st class samples should score 90 points or higher in your book (this is subjective, of course, but these samples should be somewhat special), 2nd class samples should be at least of above average quality or have something which make them interesting - avoid generic whiskies which everyone knows (Diageo Classic Malts etc.) and focus on whiskies which the next recipient might not have tasted before, offer some variety (not all peated or sherried whiskies etc.)
• passengers leaving the train at a station and new passengers boarding will be tracked in this thread (Whiskybase IDs) that everyone can follow which whiskies were tasted on the journey of the train
after 7-10 days, the train departs from participant 1, meaning that it has to be shipped to the next participant (for privacy reasons, shipping addresses are only given to the sender of the package)
• following this logic, the train will go from one participant to the next until it finally returns to me

A few things to consider:

• once you received the package, please do not tear it apart but open it carefully that the package can be re-used
• I added a lot of Parafilm to the package which can be used to seal the sample bottles to avoid leakage (please remember to forward the remaining Parafilm to the next recipient)
• add a note with Whiskybase IDs of your samples and the ABV for the next recipient, do NOT write the names of the whiskies to allow for blind tastings

There is still a chance to join, we can add a few more people to the end of the list before it returns to me at the end of the journey.

Great, I think this event has enough participants to kick it off! Let's give it another week or two for more people to join, but I think 10-12 people is a good number for this event.

I will prepare the train and start filling samples in the next days. I think we will just go in the order in which people signed up, unless sender and recipient of the package already know each other and exchange samples on the regular basis - in that case, we can adjust the route to make it interesting for everyone.

Maybe also an idea that when you get to know where you will be sending the train you also check against the next recipients ratings to avoid sending something they have already tried?

I agree with trying our best to keep the "class" quality, but at least to me when it comes to 2cl samples it is more about the excitement of trying something new, rather than sit back and relax with something known and comforting.

I have included this suggestion above, it does make a lot of sense.

The Whisky Train is ready to depart early next week, the first stop will be at Thomas Øhrbom @Whiskysaga.

You can find the route of the train and the 'passengers' in the first post above, this will be continuously updated while the train goes from one station to another. Once you have sent the package to the next recipient, please post the Whiskybase IDs of your samples in this thread, then I can update the first post accordingly.

I hope everyone will find some great drams on the route!

Logistically, that would make sense, however, I assume you see each other on a regular basis, so you can swap samples anyway. The whole point of this event is to receive whisky samples you have not yet tasted from people you do not know (yet).

The whisky train is now on its way to the first destination, hopefully it will arrive safely by the end of this week.

Shipping of the package as 'letter' without tracking costs 100 NOK, I think this will do. Additional insurance would only blow up the costs.

The whisky train is now on its way to the second destination, I hope it will arrive at Whiskycave shortly.

Due to to time constraints, there are only changes in 1st class. Looking forward to see how things continue up in Tromsø!

After a quick stop in Tromsø, the whisky train is about to continue its journey to ahroeen. Only two of the starting passengers are left in the train, let's see how it continues.

The whisky train is making progress, it is now on its way to peatbogger. Samples are going in and out, and there have been some very interesting drams on the road!

The whisky train is soon ready to depart from peatbogger and continue its journey to Johnny Rivli. While many passengers are coming and going, the train personnel has noticed a Japanese tourist that fell asleep in the last carriage, probably suffering from jet lag. Not sure if he has booked a round trip, or maybe it is time to wake him up?

We are making progress, the train has now left Johnny and is on its way to stian. Half of the way is behind us, let's see if the train will make it back to Oslo by the end of the year.
