I started drinking whisky in 2009.

Since that year I regularly buy bottles which I find interesting to drink, not to collect!!!

I have bought my first bottle of whisky in Rom in 1997. This bottle was the reason for spending the summer holidays in Scotland in the same year. Since that time I tasted a lot of whiskies (never counted them) and I am glad to discover new things again and again. Most whiskies in my collection are intended to enjoy. I was always open-minded and never fixated on a specific distillery, on a certain bottler or on one of the regions in Scotland. Therefore bottlings of many different distilleries have found theire way in my collection. I like meeting friends, enjoying some drams and having plenty of pleasure together.

About my tasting notes. Although I do try each whisky I write a note for on multiple occasions, my tasting notes are highly subjective & situational - if it was only tried as a single dram, I state it in the note. Also I adopted my 'rating'/point system, which used to be 50=average, to the MJ/MM scoring where 75=average whisky which is the de-facto standard on the whiskybase. Generally I seem to score lower than most as well and I regularly buy bottles I give 80+ to, depending on the price and how unique/interesting the whisky is.

As for my favourites - I do like a broad range of whiskies, and the most interesting ones for me, apart from sherry casks with some peated spirit are the ones that seem to opinionate. As an idea to what I like personally - I tend to like peaty, salty, sherried, fruity, creamy/milky and don't mind a dirty streak in moderation either, as in sulphur, matches, motor-oil, earth, leather, rotting wood etc. The notes I seem to like less than the next man are woody/bitter/dry, perfume-y, artificially sweet, mineral, farmy, sour & bitter (all of which can add greatly to the balance, but if they are the dominating notes [at the beginning of one of my tasting notes]), I'll most likely score it lower than others...

My personal vision is that whisky is made for drinking and to enjoy every aspect of each individual bottle. So I do love single cask (cask strength) whiskies. Another addiction are the old syrupy grain whiskies from the sixties.

I dislike collectors - no offense - for making special whiskies unreachable and unpayable. Unfortunately I finished all my listed bottles over the last thir(s)ty - forty years...

40 years x 50 weeks x a bottle per week keeps the doctor away = should be 2000 bottles...

I was first introduced to scotch single malt in 2004 when I was 17, where I tried a Glenfiddich 12YO. Since then I have been hooked on whisky. My favorite distilleries include older Glenfiddich, Glenglassaugh, Talisker, Springbank and Bowmore. My favorite independent bottlers include Scotch Malt Whisky Society and Gordon & Macphail.

I was drawn into the wonderful world of whisky by a member of the shanty choir that I sang in. He had worked in the offshore industry all over the world and started picking up whisky from taxfree shops as early as the sixties.

Now the base honored me with the Macallan Specialism.

If you are interested in buying or swapping, please feel free to send me a personal message.

My very first contact with straight whisky was in early 90th and it was a bad experience to me. I’ve never found out what brand it was but it was terrible and I refused to drink any others afterwards. In terms of whisky only some Jacky & Coke found the way for years.

Around the turn of the Millennium I’ve got a bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey as a present. It was the first serious touch and from there on my interest was aroused. Could it be that whisky isn’t that bad than I thought?

Now, a lot of years, a lot of tastings and some trips to Ireland and Scotland later, I can assuredly say, no it isn’t ;-)
Since then I’ve tasted Whisk(e)ys from around the world and found a lot I like very much. Whether sherry monsters, peaty or fruity Whisk(e)ys and others, depending on my mood I like most of them. In the meantime whisk(e)y is a hobby for me but I'm not a collector in that meaning.  I do not really have a favorite brand or distillery. However ... my heart still tends to Irish Whiskey were I’ve started from.

Since I was little I was already interested in whisky. I think it was because all the bad guys drank whisky in the Hollywood movies. My real first whisky experience was with a miniature from Chivas Regal 12. And it was bad!

After this bad start I tried a Glenlivet 12 and the world changed for me, I tasted flowers, honey and vanilla. Wow!!
Since then I spend most of my spare time in searching for whisky and everything related to it.

I'm not a Whisky collector. I drink my bottles. Not all in one go of course, but most of them are open.

I like Japanese whisky, not all of them, of course, and know a bit (not a lot) about the stuff.

I mostly like Japanese whisky because I love the country and go there at least once a year. I also arrange holidays to Japan. So if you want to go there, send me a message.

Fat and happy in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, USA.  I'm an ex-pat Canadian living in the US.  Started drinking whisky about 25 years ago, but only started paying attention in the past 10-15 years.  I have wide ranging tastes and would be hard pressed to name a single favorite, whether it be distillery or even style.

A brief explanation how I use the score. I prefer a score chart like Michael Jackson had used.

0 to 50 points: something wrong with the whisky, astringent, has been bottled as a single malt by mistake?
50 to 60 points: from my point of view unbalanced whisky without any character
60 to 69 points: enjoyable malt but nothing special.
70 to 74 points: the good malts are rated above 70 points, it is worth to try them
75 to 79 points: these ones are a must try
80 to 89 points: well, all malts in this range are exceptional good. Outstanding and characteristical.
over 90 points: dream whisky, here you'll find the real big ones. A festival for eyes, nose and palate, unfortunately not seldom those will burn a big hole into your wallet (if you can find one of those). ;-)

Wer Lust hat darf sich das gerne kopieren und dran orientieren.
Feel free to copy the text.

I have the honour of being Lagavulin "specialist" here.

If pressed I'd say Lagavulin is also my favourite distillery, because a dram of Lagavulin 16 in a pub in Scotland in the winter of 2007 changed me from someone who enjoyed the occasional dram to someone who now owns more bottles than he can empty in a decade...
