Nose

Sherry, coconut, apples, raisins, wood and menthol. Very smooth.

Taste

At first, the wood appears and is followed by a fruity punch - apples, oranges, peaches, cherries and dates. Then the chocolate, caramel and toffee kick in. The mint/menthol is there too, together with the delicate spices.

Finish

Quite long, spicy - pepper, gigner, cinnamon.

Comments

Beautifully polished, a very soft whisky. Such a shame it's only 43%.

‘Moorish yet muddled’

N: Its Glenfarclas show down time with the 25, 30 and 40yo’s ready and waiting, so lets see what the 25 has to offer. Chocolate notes with a sherry wine body - notes i suspect i’ll see on the palate. The buttery, sherry pancake malt combined with yeasty old casks wood give this 25yo a super maturity beyond its labelled 25 years, so of course there are some much older casks in the mix. Theres lime citrus connected with the wood oils, a fair amount of nuttiness [chopped hazelnuts mainly], miso soup and a not quite definable fish sauce/meat stock ‘thing’. The nose then offers equal amounts of charm together with curiosity - many moorish notes equal to some quirkier ones.

T: Sherry wine arrival as i suspected, various wood spices, hints of chocolate that come and go and then some undefinable herbs and spices thrown in together. Fairly long yet muddled development.

F: Herbal chocolate notes - salted, chilli chocolate with light sherry touches throughout. Fairly drying and yet consistently giving out in flavour and activity. Peppery tingles on the tip and sides of the tongue, dryness in the middle and theres some old bitter wood lurking around the back. Theres a fairly odd finish - stale old Wotsits where the oils are starting to become rancid. Reminds me of bad crisp batches from the early 80’s.

C: This is a single malt with lots to offer, some good, some not so. Theres definitely a muddle in the middle and theres the worryingly unique and odd finish - either its a weird batch or my palate is off tonight. Lets score this with the ‘benefit of the doubt’ over the finish and move onto the 30yo.

Scores a B-

Nose

Old, spicy sherry. Mushy, ripe fruits. Some herbs. Little caramel. Some honey.

Taste

Sweet sherry. Very sweet. Caramel, biscuit, spicy oak, a hint of peat smoke. Sherry still dominant over the oak after all these years.

Finish

Long finish, very spicy oak. Milk chocolate with grapes and hazelnuts. Just a little driness, easily retraped by the sherry sweetness.

Comments

Beautiful! Very mature. Perfectly balanced. I like it a little better then the 30yo Glenfarclas.
