Jonquiripe corn

Nose

Vanilla and caramel, some honey and some exotic fruits, very pleasant.

Taste

Vanilla again, a bit oak, some pineapples maybe

Finish

Quite short but very pleasant, oak remains

Nose

Spicy, orange blossom, honey-tinged sweetness with vanilla and dried oak. Mango and melon note with a wisp of smoke

Taste

Soft vanilla and sweet berley with a hint of grape

Finish

Muscovado sweetness balanced by wisps of Orcadian peat smoke

Color

Deep gold

Nose

slightly smoky and also salty (seaweed). Oak and a hint of leather. Floral and very fresh. Some citrus.

Taste

slightly oily. Lots of oak and vanilla. Hints of liquorice, anice and orange.

Finish

peppery but soft. Very slightly smoky but also pretty sweet vanilla.

Comments

although not a really peat-lover: i like the typical smoky whisky's of Highland Park very much.

Color

Deep gold

Nose

The 'aromatic peat' that HP is so proud of is there, but less so. Vanilla, slightly spicy. A bit salty too. Slight licorice, soft and subtle.

Taste

Very mild. Fine sweet vanilla with a slightly spicy edge. Subdued. Oak at the end is a little stronger, but I miss that typical full flavor of HP.

Finish

Medium length. The vanilla and oak are nice, together with some nutmeg, malt and that soft smoky note at the end. Not too much going on though.

Comments

Well I must say for the price it's going for, please buy the 18 instead and spend the rest on a good glass for it. This has the hallmarks of HP, but this is just not good enough if you ask me.

The Norseman Leif Eriksson was the first European to set foot on the American continent (eat your heart out, Columbus!), starting settlements in Labrador and Newfoundland in the early 11^th Century. Highland Park introduced this limited release to the Duty Free range (although it is easy to find in regular stores as well) in 2011. It is a special HP as it only contains whisky from American oak, both bourbon and sherry casks, while the standard range matured on European oak. I tasted this at a very special location indeed, the Lars Homestead near Nefta, Tunisia, that I had just restored with a couple of friends. But that is another story (see www.savelars.com).

The nose is light and fragrant on oats, dried grass, earth and fruit. The fruit is primarily melon, pears and prunes. The whole is sprinkled with a pinch of salt. Rather spicy on pepper, vanilla and oak. I even get some fir needles.

Taste

On the palate, this turns out to be a lightweight. Very malty and sweet. Again some oak, vanilla and salt, closely followed by the fruit, joined by a lot of citrus. But the body leaves a lot to be desired.

Finish

The finish is short on sweet oak.

Comments

This certainly is not a bad whisky, but it is not a high flyer either. And it is not the conditions in which I tasted it, since I re-tasted it today. For that price (approx. 70 EUR) you can find much better HP.

Well, at 80 EURO it is way overpriced, but at discount prices of around 60 it`s OK. It has nothing at all in common with the Highland Park range. There is not a splinter of sherrywoord to be discovered indeed. It` s really a subtle speyside disguised with a vikinghelmet but sweeter than such, not at all dry and fruity as well (young?).
I can`t discover any of it`s claimed smokyness but it may be in there in all it`s hidden subtlety. Vanilla and fresh fruit are pronounced but there is a lot more in there if you concentrate really really hard. Does not have much body and reminds me of an expensive complex malt that you have just drowned in too much water. In the end it`s not like that, it`s just that it`s details are very subtle which makes it quite interesting as a whole. So not one to drink after a smoke, a spicy meal or a robust highlander or it will fail to impress. On the other hand it will be liked by the untrained palate too as it makes a very easy whisky to drink.

Had the chance to try this today, fantastic! Went to let the owner of
this liquor store try the Balvenie tun 1401 #3 and he pulled this out.
He said it was given him to try from a friend from Scotland. I Liked it
and haven`t tried any of these before, well done!

Remember it\'s maturity that makes whisky great! That\'s why I Love The Glenrothes!

Leif Eriksson is a new release from the Orcadian distillery of Highland Park, and commemorates the first European to have reached America, establishing settlements in Newfoundland and Labrador during the early 11th century. This is a highly unusual variant of Highland Park, since it features no spirit matured in European oak ex-Sherry casks, only whisky from former Bourbon barrels and American oak Sherry casks. The result is a nose of mixed spices, vanilla and muted bonbons. Briefly floral with time, before mangoes, figs and a slightly earthy note of smoke and soy sauce appear. The palate offers fresh citrus fruit, malt and gentle peat smoke, while the medium-length finish is relatively sweet, with oak and a little peat.
