Color

Amber

Nose

Peat smoke. The sweetness from tropical fruits and vanilla. Malt and oak. Rasisins. Very fresh (seaweed ?). Also a hint of liquorice.

Taste

Strong liquorice. Tabacco and very sweet. Vanilla and chocolate. A little oily and a bit salty. Complex.

Finish

After the peat smoke comes the sweet chocolate and vanilla. Saltyness remains. Complex.

Comments

First: this whisky is perfectly balanced. This tasting note is about the use without water, which I usually prefer. But.....after adding some water, nose, taste and finish score even slightly higher. Big surprise !

Color

Old gold

Nose

Peaty and oily initially. Then a freshness that I didn't expect. Sweet and salty at the same time. Vanilla sweetness, citrus, malty and oak. Something grassy or hay to this, and licorice. Tobacco perhaps. Unbelievably complex.

Taste

Drying, licorice again, and there's that grass/hay note again. This adds balance. Vanilla and maybe even some chocolate. Very oily, salty as well. So much going on here. Motor oil hardness versus vanilla and fruity sweetness. Astonishing.

Finish

Long and warming. As if sitting by a coal fire on a cold day. All the same flavors are there still, but all subtle and soft in the background, and almost everything remains till the end.

Comments

For me the complexity of Lagavulin is unequaled, and this makes almost every expression worth while. This one, however, is another step up from the 'standard' Lagavulins. Absolutely love this.

The color is like soft, smooth cream; peat smoke in the nose, as well as some salt and iodine; the palate is absolute wonderfull with peat, hints of citrus and a rather nice (soft) salty taste; a lovely and very pleasant mouthfeeling; the finish is unforgettable: warm and complete. Sublime!
