Notes & Reviews

Note from www.compassboxwhisky.com

For information, here are the specs of the first two batches of The
Spice Tree:

Type: Vatted Malt. A blend of single malts from different distilleries.

Tasting Notes: A natural, deep, gold-brown colour and a rich nose
with spices such as clove and nutmeg, and sweet stewed fruits.
Palate is soft, sweet, deep and rich with a malt whisky fruitiness
embellished by rich spice. Very long.

Lead Distilleries: Dailuaine, Teaninich and two other malt whiskies
distilled in the villages of Brora and Longmorn.

Wood: 100% first-fill Bourbon barrels and first-fill, recharred
American oak hogsheads for the primary maturation. A portion of
the whisky went through a secondary maturation on new (virgin)
French Sessile oak, heavily toasted. Our inaugural batch (labelled
as such on the front and back labels) had one toast level. Our
second batch, released April 2006, had several different toast
levels for a slightly more subtle yet complex flavour profile,
but definitely similar to the inaugural batch.

I\'ll only drink on days that start with T: Tuesday, Thursday Today & Tomorrow...

N: spices, honey, bees wax, some nuts, plums and vanilla
T: very spicy - pepper and paprika, nuts and citrus
F: orange, creamy coffee, again the spices - cloves and butterscotch
looks like a big part of Clynelish
I\'ll only drink on days that start with T: Tuesday, Thursday Today & Tomorrow...

The five Scotch whiskies in the Signature Range from Compass Box cover the entire spectrum of Scotch whisky styles, from the delicate, sweet character of Asyla, to the subtle vanilla, clove and fruity characteristics of Oak Cross, the rich and spice notes of The Spice Tree, the peatysmoky character of The Peat Monster and the elegant flavours of vanilla cream, toffee and coconut in Hedonism. Each is made from the highest quality casks, to create more complexity. The whiskies are combined according to each recipe and returned to casks for marrying up to 24 months before bottling. Steps like these enhance complexity, flavour integration and soft mouthfeel.

Compass Box`s delicious Spice Tree was briefly illegitimate, according
to SWA regulations. After adjusting its creation, Spice Tree is back,
and better than ever. It`s a blended malt made from Highland malt
whiskies, aged in specially made casks with new French oak heads.

I like my whisky old and my women young!

Colour: deep,gold-brown
Nose: spices -  nutmeg and clove - and stewed fruits.
Taste: promising, soft and rich, with nice bodied fruitiness!! And some spicies.
Finish: medium long
Comments: Very enjoyable dram!

Color

Chestnutoloroso sherry
Nose
The nose starts with notes of wet forrest, wood and hay. Then some sweet, warm spices like nutgmeg and cinnamon.
Taste
Starts with vanilla and orange. Followed by spices and orange peel. Slowly fades to a warm peppery finish.
Finish
Complex with orange peel, the spice and coffee beans.
Comments
I like this complex, affordable whisky. First introduction to Compass box, probably not the last.
