Oats and honey are the main features of the nose without water. A couple of drops of water brings out old leather, suede (?) and oatcakes, reducing the honey. Quite fiery and spicy on the palate without water. Water dulled it down considerably but didn`t reveal much. Medium length, malty finish. Distinctive, but rough around the edges.

Appearance: Amber -2, hay.  Slowly forms large, heavy droplets of legs.

Nose: Salt, leather, sawdust, pears, (touch of peat? where did that come from?)

Palate: spicy vanilla and leather arrival, then more vegetal, warming mouthfeel, astringent, peppery with dry toasted wood then heavy salt notes.

Finish: Long, dry with herbs salt and wood smoke.

Conclusions: Challenging, spicy/salty dram with lots to discover, becomes more and more interesting over time and with water.  Not necessarily for novices, but very rewarding and educational.  An uncompromising and serious dram.

Score: 80/100

Gin clear
Nose
quite a lot of honey, menthol, lemon (peel, uncut), wet oak, green grapes, some pine resin, some chalk, some green tea, touch of chamomille, also a slight earthy/farmy and and asphalt-y note (85)
A bit later (<10 mins): honey seems to increase even, there was a brief point when this had immense honey notes, but these disappeared as quick as they appeared. Interesting. (88)
A bit later (>10 mins): seems a lot flatter now, also more oaky. Some tea notes (kid's fruit tea now as well) march forward, japanese mochi,  (83)
Taste
quite sweet but somewhat undefined (glucose sugar/honey/mochi), grainy, some oakyness upfront, but also a touch bitter, (81)
Finish
cereals/grains, animal hide (carpet), with a slightly bitter woody/tea-tannins note that seems to increase over the length of the finish, slight honey, touch of smoke. Behind that seem to lurk some fruits, but turns too woody/bitter for me at the end (80)

Remember - whisky scores and impressions are highly subjective and situational by nature - so don't go and buy whisky according to someone else's taste...

Nose

The nose is dusty with a lot of hay, apples and quite a bit of caramel, like in those Werthers Original candies. Vanilla cookies. Somewhat greasy. Absolutely devoid of fruit. Reminds me of smelling a handful of malted barley during a presentation. So, very grainy. Tea of which the bag was not left long enough in the glass and then sat on the kitchen counter for two hours. Weak tea, so to speak. Not really up my alley, I must say, although that does not mean a thing, of course.

Taste

On the palate, it kind of reminds me of the old Glen Garioch with quite a bit of spices and even some peat, which I had not found on the nose. Again, greasy and dusty, but also very sharp, almost astringent. A lot of honey, but also quite a few bitter elements. The grain remains in the lead, though.

Finish

On the long finish, this whisky seems a lot older than it really is, due to that dusty side.

Comments

This Glen Garioch is not really my cup of tea. So my experience with Glen Garioch is nicely balanced: three hits and three misses.

It`s not exactly my style of whisky. It`s fruity, light, but also malty and a little warming. However, it could not convince me. Anyways, I appreciate I could taste it. Thank you whiskybase.

A very nice whisky, sweet, malty with brown sugar. A long spicy finish. 87 points

Nose
Warming, malty and grainy at first nosing with green tea and a whiff of peat. Nice and pleasant.
Taste
Smooth with lots of tea and notes of malt, toffee and toasted dark bread. Tasty.
Finish
Medium long with a slight spicyness (white pepper) and bitterness (chinese medicine) but remaining pleasant.
Comments
Again a very good whisky from Archives, First Release. Thank you whiskybase for the sample.

The nose is rather creamy, full with flowers, some sherry? and paint! Again these pleasant creamy and sherryish ingredients in the taste, as well as oranges, marzipan and malt; the finish is very nice and medium long. Good dram!
